Raymond Paley was educated at Eton. From there he entered Trinity College, Cambridge where he showed himself the most brilliant student among a remarkable collection of fellow undergraduates. He was taught at Cambridge by Hardy and Littlewood and it was under Littlewood 's supervision that he undertook research [1]:- He was Pemberton and Yeats prizeman, and Bladwin scholar and research scholar in He won a Smith's Prize in 1930 and was elected a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. While he was undertaking research, Zygmund spent the academic year 1930-31 at Cambridge. Paley had already proved impressive results on Fourier series and had collaborated with Littlewood , his supervisor. Zygmund discovered Paley's extraordinary talent and the two worked jointly on existence proofs, brilliantly applying ideas from Borel 's Zygmund 's book Trigonometric Series published in 1935 owes a debt to the joint work that he carried out with Paley.

Norbert Wiener wrote in [1]:- Soon after his arrival in America, however, certain studies of lacunary series which Paley had already begun suggested a new attack on the theory of interpolation and allied trigonometrical problems. These results led successively to the study of quasi-analytic functions, of entire functions of order one-half, and of many related questions.

Mary Shelley's The Last Man : Apocalypse Without Millennium
by Morton D. Paley
reprinted from the Keats-Shelley Review
Early in 1826 appeared a book advertised as a "new Romance, or, rather Prophetic Tale" Mary Shelley's novel The Last Man . It was published at just the wrong time. Since 1823 the literary world had been preoccupied with a controversy about just who had invented the Last Man, beginning with the publication of Thomas Campbell's poem "The Last Man" and Francis Jeffrey's suggestion in the Edinburgh Review that Campbell was indebted to Byron's "Darkness" for the idea. Campbell was moved to print an open letter to Jeffrey asserting his own priority and claiming that it was he who at least fifteen years before had suggested to Byron the subject of "a being witnessing the extinction of his species and of the creation, and of his looking, under the fading eye of nature, at desolate cities, ships floating with the dead . . . ." According to Campbell, the publication of "Darkness" had discouraged him from pursuing the theme, but "I was provoked to change my mind, when my friend Barry Cornwall informed me that an acquaintance of his intended to write a long poem entitled the Last man." Barry Cornwall's acquaintance was Thomas Lovell Beddoes, who had been projecting

Mary Shelley's The Last Man : Apocalypse Without Millenium
    by Morton D. Paley
    [ . . . continued]
The idea of a millennium does surface repeatedly in The Last Man but it always turns out to be a will-of-the-wisp. This is nowhere so evident as in the speculations of the astronomer Merrival, whose views seem ironically compounded of the most perfectibilian aspects of William Godwin's and Percy Bysshe Shelley's. Before the plague has left the East, Merrival asserts that "in a hundred thousand years . . . the pole of the earth will coincide with the pole of the ecliptic, an universal spring will be produced, and earth become a paradise" (p. 159). When news is received of the spread of the plague westward from Turkey, however, Merrival concedes "that the joyful prospect of an earthly paradise after an hundred thousand years, was clouded to him by the knowledge that in a certain period of time after, an earthly hell or purgatory would occur, when ecliptic and equator would be at right angles" (p. 160). After England is ravaged by the plague, the astronomer reappears as a caricature of millenarian expectation, having completed his Essay on the Pericyclical Motion of the Earth's Axis
Merrival talked of the state of mankind six thousand years hence. He might with equal interest to us, have added a commentary, to describe the unknown and unimaginable lineaments of the creatures, who would then occupy the vacated dwellings of mankind. (p. 210).

    Paley graphs
Paley graphs are named after Raymond E.A.C. Paley (1907-1933). Paley was an MIT mathematician. He worked together with Norbert Wiener. He died in an avalanche in 1933 while skiing in the Canadian Rockies. The graphs that bear his name are constructed as follows: Given a finite field F with q elements, make a graph with vertex set F where two vertices are joined when their difference is a square in the field. This is an undirected graph when q is congruent 1 (mod 4). For q t + 1, the parameters are v t k t t t Examples ( q = 5 and q For q = 13 the Paley graph is locally a hexagon, so that the graph is a quotient of the hexagonal grid: Paley graphs are isomorphic to their complements: if a is a nonsquare, then the map that sends x to ax is an isomorphism from the graph to its complement.
    Independence and chromatic number
The independence numbers of the Paley graphs of prime order less than 7000 were computed by Shearer. In I. Broere, D. Döman, J. N. Ridley, The clique numbers and chromatic numbers of certain Paley graphs , Quaestiones Math.
