Biography
Paul Painleve
French Mathematician and Statesman Born: December 5, 1863 at Paris
Died: October 29, 1933 at Paris Premier of France: September 12 - November 13, 1917 A distinguished mathematician; professor at the Sorbonne, the Polytechnique and the University of Lille, Painleve was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1900. He developed an interest in aeronautics after making his first flight as Wilbur Wright's passenger in 1908. He developed a course in aircraft mechanics the following year. Painleve entered politics in 1906 when he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies from Paris. He held a number of key posts during the First World War including Minister of War and Premier. He made the decision to replace General Nivelle with Petain as commander of the Verdun salient and appointed Marshal Foch to represent France on the Supreme Allied Council before resigning in favor of Georges Clemenceau. Painleve led la ligue de la Republique from 1921 to '22 before joining the Cartel des gauches (the Left) . He lost the presidential election to Gaston Doumergue in 1924. The Cartel won control of the Chamber of Deputies that year but Senate conservatives had sufficient strength to deny Painleve a home at the Elysees. Painleve was appoint Premier for a second time in 1925 but was, like his predecessor Herriot, unable to secure passage of the Cartel's economic program.

Who's Who: Paul Painleve
Updated - Friday, 30 November, 2001 Paul Painleve (1863-1933), the celebrated mathematician and politician, was the shortest serving French Prime Minister of the war - at just two months - and easily its least experienced. Painleve's mathematical achievements saw him teach as a professor at the Sorbonne, the Ecole Polytechnique and at the University of Lille. He won the Grand Prix des Sciences Mathematiques in 1890 and was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1900. In political terms Painleve entered parliament rather late in life, at the age of 43 in 1906. There he quickly established himself at the head of the small Republican-Socialist group. Taking a keen interest in the military conduct of the war from the start - he was especially interested in aviation and was Wilbur Wright's first French passenger in 1908 - Painleve was both an ardent 'easterner' (which led him to aggressively champion General Sarrail's cause during the summer of 1915) and a firm believer in Petain's policy of defensive strategy.

Primary Documents: Paul Painleve on the Second Battle of the Aisne, 7 July 1917
Updated - Saturday, 10 January, 2004 Reproduced below is the text of French War Minister Paul Painleve's public statement (dated 7 July 1917) in the wake of the failure of the French Army's offensive at the Aisne and Champagne. The French Army's failure to achieve success during the Aisne/Champagne offensive - which was opposed outright by Painleve, who foresaw disaster - directly led to the replacement of the Commander-in-Chief Robert Nivelle . Nivelle, who had promised an end to the war through victory at the Aisne, was replaced by Henri-Philippe Petain Click here to read Kaiser Wilhelm II's reaction to news of the French failure at the Aisne and Champagne. Click here to read Erich Ludendorff's official announcement dated 28 April 1917. Paul Painleve, French Minister of War, on the Third Battle of the Aisne and Second Battle of Champagne, 7 July 1917 Grave mistakes were made in the course of our last offensive. We care neither to deny nor to minimize them. France is sufficiently sure of herself to be able to look the truth in the face. Yes, the price paid for the results that were obtained were paid for too dearly. It is true we suffered heavy losses, which, though they fell short of the fantastic figures that have been set about no one knows by whom, were unnecessarily heavy losses which could have been avoided and must be avoided in the future.
