Luca Pacioli 's father was Bartolomeo Pacioli, but Pacioli does not appear to have been brought up in his parents house. He lived as a child with the Befolci family in Sansepolcro which was the town of his birth. This town is very much in the centre of Italy about 60 km north of the city of Perugia. As far as Pacioli was concerned, perhaps the most important feature of this small commercial town was the fact that Piero della Francesca had a studio and workshop in there and della Francesca spent quite some time there despite frequent commissions in other towns Although we know little of Pacioli's early life, the conjecture that he may have received at least a part of his education in the studio of della Francesca in Sansepolcro must at least have a strong chance of being correct. One reason that this seems likely to be true is the extensive knowledge that Pacioli had of the work of Piero della Francesca and Pacioli's writings were very strongly influenced by those of Piero Pacioli moved away from Sansepolcro while he was still a young lad. He moved to Venice to enter the service of the wealthy merchant Antonio Rompiansi whose house was in the highly desirable Giudecca district of that city. One has to assume that Pacioli was already well educated in basic mathematics from studies in Sansepolcro and he certainly must have been well educated generally to have been chosen as a tutor to Rompiansi's three sons. However, Pacioli took the opportunity to continue his mathematical studies at a higher level while in Venice, studying mathematics under Domenico Bragadino. During this time Pacioli gained experience both in teaching, from his role as tutor, and also in business from his role helping with Rompiansi's affairs.

Pacioli , Luca de Fifteenth century Franciscan friar who wrote De Devina Propotione (1497), an attempt to re-discover the true shapes and proportions of the classical Roman alphabet. Pacioli also collaborated with Leonardo da Vinci, but he is best known for Summa de Arithmetica (1494), in which he provided the first printed description of double entry bookeeping. Paid-in capital Another term for Additional Paid-In Capital. See contributed capital. Par value The nominal, or officially stated value of a stock share when it is issued. Par value has little real relevance for accounting, contributed capital Payback period For a working spreadsheet example of payback period calculations, download the free financial metrics tool click here Like internal rate of return , the payback period metric takes essentially an "Investment" view of the action, plan, or scenario, and its estimated cash flow stream. Payback period is the length of time required to recover the cost of an investment (e.g. purchase of computer software or hardware), usually measured in years. Other things being equal, the better investment is the one with the shorter payback period. Also, payback periods are sometimes used as a way of comparing alternative investments with respect to risk: other things being equal, the investment with the shorter payback period is considered less risky.

"In 1509 there had appeared also at Venice a very notable edition of the fifteen books of the Elements from the press of Paganinus de Paganinis... From the typographical point of view, it is a very remarkable and attractive book. The title, in red and black, is admirably spaced. The text, which is not overloaded with commentary, fills only half the width of the page, the ample margin being occupied by the diagrams which are on an unusually large scale... In the Venetian Euclids of 1482, 1505 and 1509 the art of book-production reached the meridian" (Thomas-Stanford).

THE FIRST EXPOSITION OF DOUBLE-ENTRY BOOKKEEPING A MERCHANT'S COPY PACIOLI, Luca. Toscolano, Paganino de Paganini, 1523. Second edition of Pacioli's treatise on mathematics, an exact reprint of the first edition of Venice, 1494, containing the first printed exposition of double-entry bookkeeping. Pacioli's name heads the several dedicatory prefaces. Prior to its first publication in 1494, Pacioli had been working on the Summa de Arithmetica for a period of thirty years. Pacioli regretted the low ebb to which teaching had fallen and he thought that the fault lay in the use of improper methods and in the scarcity of available subject matter. He sought to correct these faults in the Summa. He divided the material as follows: 1. Arithmetic and algebra. 2. Their use in trade reckoning. 3. Bookkeeping. 4. Money and exchange. 5. Pure and especially applied geometry. 'Pacioli in Venice was putting the book-keeping section of the Summa in shape for publication towards the end of 1493, but that portion was certainly written some time before the date of publication ... At no place did Pacioli claim originality for the double-entry system of book-keeping which he described. He specifically stated that he was merely writing down the system which had been used in Venice for over two hundred years ...

Press Release
April 10, 1998
Rewriting the History of Accounting? Recently discovered early 15th Century Venetian Bookkeeping Instructions A few months ago drs. Johanna Postma and drs. A. J. van der Helm discovered a third manuscript, dated 1475, of Benedetto COTRUGLI's "LIBRO DE L'ARTE DE LA MERCATURA" in the National Library of Malta, Vallette (copyist was Marino de Raphaeli de Ragusa). This manuscript is nine years older than the oldest previously known (copyist was Strozzi, 1484). The text of this manuscript is followed by an "appendix", in the same handwriting, which is even more important. Starting with some instruction, it contains an inventory and 266 journal entries, all dated Neapoli 1475. The themes are very realistic: all kinds of trade with taxes, brokerage and other costs, "Camera d'Imprestedi", partnerships, letters of exchange, commercial voyages (to one's own account, to the account of the partnership or commissioned to someone else) to Beirut, Alexandria and Spain, ship insurance, silk industry (from cocoons bought to silk sold), building houses, let and rent of houses, barter (corn for slaves for example). Between groups of journal entries are more instructions.
