Jacques Maritain Center The Summa Theologica of St. Thomas A Summa Theologica is, broadly speaking, a compendium, summary, or manual of theology. There is not in the English language an exact equivalent of the Latin word Summa as it was used by medieval writers. Perhaps the words "Complete Manual" would best convey to people using our language the idea which was in the minds of those who invented the Latin term. We always think of a compendium, or summary, as of a book or Excerpta, in which many things are omitted, some of these being either necessary or important. In a Summa there must be no such omissions. Things may be left out which properly would find a place only in a compete elucidation and development of a subject considered in all its aspects; but the Summa must contain a statement, explanation and proof of all that is necessary for the comprehension of the subject as a whole and in all its essential parts. Some latitude is allowed in the choice of divisions, arguments and illustrations. Summae composed by different men treating the same subject may not be similar in all respects. In all cases, however, the doctrine must be complete, briefly stated, sufficiently proved, illustrated and defended. Although we knew this area from earlier trips, most of the sundials were new to us. Ton Bron and Dik de Groot, who organised this trip, surprised us with a 37-page well-researched booklet containing sundial descriptions and as many as 27 colour photographs. Of particular interest was Leiden 11, built in 1976 by member H. Haasnoot. It has two semi-annual half-cylindrical dial plates carrying EOT half-curves for increasing and decreasing declination, respectively. The ends of two thin rods provide the shadows. "Zenith" for Sep 1986 featured a detailed description. Note also the three motorised "sundial machines" by Ton Bron. They were described in this Bulletin earlier. Ton also owns a Bernhart dial [the model also seen in front of the Stuttgart Planetarium and in the Deutsches Museum (Munich) Sundial Garden]. ELECTROCHIMIE ET COUCHES MINCES / ELECTRONS, PHOTONS, SURFACES ELECTRODEPOSITION de METAUX sur SEMICONDUCTEURS Personnes impliquées : Fouad Maroun Philippe Allongue Jean-Noël Chazalviel Jacques Peretti Notre équipe a acquis une grande compétence dans la caractérisation des électrodes semi-conductrices par spectroscopie infrarouge en milieu électrochimique. La grande sensibilité dont on dispose dans ce cas là est en partie due à l'utilisation d'une géométrie particulière : la géométrie ATR . Disposer d'un outil aussi efficace pour les électrodes métalliques est extrêmement souhaitable, en particulier pour les applications dans le domaine de l'électrocatalyse. Dans ce but, nous nous intéressons aux dépôts texturés de métaux sur semi-conducteurs. Nous avons en effet démontré que lorsque les dépôts possédaient une morphologie adéquate (dépôts denses et non percolants), ils permettaient d'utiliser la géométrie ATR et, de plus, d'augmenter fortement l'absorption des espèces adsorbées à la surface du métal. Cette exaltation de l'absorption infrarouge (effet baptisé SEIRA) est due à des phénomènes de résonances électromagnétiques au sein de la couche métallique. Nous travaillons désormais à obtenir des dépôts de manière plus contrôlée. Nous tentons en particulier d'obtenir des dépôts structurés régulièrement en utilisant la lumière pour moduler spatialement le dépôt électrochimique du métal. On espère ainsi simuler les effets d'augmentation et mettre au point un outil d'analyse quantitatif.
