It was a wealthy family, members having frequently served in the French provincial Parlements, with Jacques' father owning substantial lands. Jacques was the younger of his parents two sons, so would not have inherited the family estates, these would have gone to his elder brother. One of the expected routes for the younger son of the landed gentry would be to join the Church and indeed this is exactly what Jacques' father expected of him. Although his education was aimed towards the study of theology, Jacques developed a liking for other topics, particularly science and mathematics. He had very little tuition in mathematics, however, so he made efforts to teach himself. At one stage he did receive a little help with his mathematics from a tutor, but basically he was self taught in mathematics. At the age of around fifteen he produced his first substantial piece of mathematics which he wrote up. The other subjects which interested him at this stage were chemistry and mechanics but, in order to continue to receive his father's financial support, he had little option but to follow his father's wishes and begin to study theology. The thoughts of becoming a priest did not suit Ozanam who seems to have enjoyed socialising, enjoyed gambling, and enjoyed spending money. Schaaf writes in [1]:-

In 1836 he left Paris, where he had known Chateaubriand, Ballanche, Montalembert, and Lacordaire, and was appointed to the bench at Lyons, but two years later returned to Paris to submit his thesis on Dante Like his friend Lacordaire he believed that a Christian democracy was the end towards which Providence was leading the world, and after the Revolution of 1848 aided him by his writings in the Ere Nouvelle. In 1846 he visited Italy to regain his strength, undermined by a fever. On his return he published Etudes germaniques ; finally, in 1849, the greatest of his works: La civilisation chretienne chez les Francs . The Academy of Inscriptions awarded him the "Grand Prix Gobert" for two successive years. In 1852 he made a short journey to Spain an account of which is found in the posthumous work: In the beginning of the next year, his doctors again sent him to Italy, but he returned to Marseilles to die. When the priest exhorted him to have confidence in God , he replied "Oh why should I fear God , whom I love so much?" Complying with his desire the Government allowed him to be interred in the crypt of the "Carmes".

JACQUES OZANAM Mathématicien français, né à Bouligneux en 1640; mort à Paris le 3 avril, 1717. Il est issu d'une famille riche qui avait renoncé à la religion juive pour le catholicisme. Bien qu'il ait commencé l'étude de la théologie sur le souhait de son père, il était plus fortement attiré par les mathématiques, qu'il a maîtrisées sans aide d'un professeur. À l'âge de quinze il écrit un traité mathématique. A la mort de son père, il renoncé à la théologie après quatre ans d'études et donne des cours de mathématiques dans une institution privée. Il semble également que ses supérieurs du séminaire où il fut élève, lui enjoignirent de stopper ses recherches en math. Exemple d'apostasie scientifique, Jacques Ozanam écrivit : "Il appartient aux Docteurs de la Sorbonne de disputer, au pape de prononcer et au mathématicien d'aller en Paradis en ligne perpendiculaire". Dans toute son œuvre, à la rigueur de ses mathématiques, il ne manqua jamais d'ajouter une pointe d'anticléricalisme, parfois de bon aloi mais souvent virulent. A maintes reprises, il se moqua de l'Église. A titre d'exemple, voici l'un de ces problèmes d'arithmétique : "Comment doivent s'y prendre 24 religieuses réparties en huit cellules de trois autour d'un carré pour recevoir la nuit 3 hommes sans que la supérieure, qui compte les présences par rangée, s'en aperçoive".
