Beatty Sequences
Let r be a positive irrational number. Set s r , and define two sequences: a n n r and b n n s n Obviously, all terms of both sequences are irrational. In particular, none of them is integer. A remarkable theorem discovered by Sam Beatty in 1926 states that, for any integer N , there is exactly one element from the union a n b n that lies in the interval N N This property is very remarkable for the following reason. By definition , for a non-integer N is the same as N Thus Beatty's theorem asserts that the union of sequences of whole parts a n b n N a n b n do not intersect . Therefore, a n b n N a n b n which means that the sequences of whole parts complement each other in N . In this context, two sequences of integers that complement each other in N are called complementary , and Beatty's theorem shows a surprising way to generate such complementary sequences. Let's prove Beatty's theorem. One elegant proof was published in 1927 by A. Ostrowski and A.C. Eitken The proof appears in Ross Honsberger's Ingenuity in Mathematics (MAA, 1970, pp 94-95.) While reading the book, I realized that Beatty's theorem is related to the problem of distribution of fractions on a unit interval that has been discussed

AN ANALYSIS OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN'S LEGAL ARGUMENTS AGAINST SECESSION
by James Ostrowski* Paper delivered at the first-ever academic conference on secession"Secession, State, and Economy", sponsored by the Mises Institute, Auburn, Alabama, held at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, April 7-9, 1995. *Member of the bar of New York (1984); Brooklyn Law School (J.D. 1983); State University of New York at Buffalo (B.A. Philosophy, 1980). INTRODUCTION
On May 27, 1861, the army of the United States of America (the "Union")a nation formed by consecutive secessions, first from Great Britain in 1776, and then from itself in 17881invaded the State of Virginia,2 which had recently seceded from the Union, in an effort to negate that secession by violent force. The historical result of the effort begun that day is well known and indisputable: after four years of brutal warfare, which killed 620,000 Americans, the United States negated the secession of the Confederate States of America, and forcibly re-enrolled them into the Union. The Civil War ended slavery, left the South in economic ruins, and set the stage for twelve years of military rule there. Beyond its immediate effects, the Civil War made drastic changes in politics and law that continue to shape our world 130 years later. Arthur Ekirch writes:

Alexander Beilinson, Professor in Mathematics Beilinson received the prize for achievements in representation theory, arithmetic geometry and modern mathematical physics. The prize carries an award of 150,000 Swiss francs (approximately $87,000), and two fellowships each of 30,000 Swiss francs. The Ostrowski Prize is awarded every other year by the Ostrowski Foundation, which was created by Alexander Ostrowski, a longtime professor at the University of Basel. Ostroswki left his estate to the foundation in order to establish a prize for outstanding achievements in pure mathematics and the foundations of numerical mathematics. The prize jury consists of representatives from the universities of Basel, Jerusalem and Waterloo, and from the academies of Denmark and the Netherlands. , has received the Robert Trumpler Award of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific for the year 2000 for an outstanding Ph.D. thesis. Before 1997, a large and confusing range of values had been reported for the primordial deuterium abundance. The Astronomical Society of the Pacific cited Burles for convincingly demonstrating in his dissertation a relatively low value for the ratio using data from distant quasars. This value, when taken in connection with various astronomical observations, provides compelling evidence for the existence of an exotic form of dark matter that is not made of protons and neutrons, according to the society.
