William Osgood entered Harvard College in 1882, graduating in 1886. At first he studied classics but Benjamin Osgood Peirce, a mathematical physicist, and F N Cole persuaded him to study mathematics. Osgood undertook graduate work at Harvard for a year. Cole had attended Klein Klein . Osgood did this and also undertook graduate work at Erlangen in 1889. His thesis was based on work of Klein and Max Noether on Abelian integrals . After being awarded a doctorate by Erlangen in 1890, he returned to Harvard where he taught until he retired. Osgood's main work was on the convergence of sequences of continuous functions, solutions of differential equations , the calculus of variations and space filling curves. His Lehrbuch der Funktionentheorie (1907) became a classic.

By Joseph L. Walsh
, the object of which was to summarize in one collection all mathematical research up to 1900. Klein also had an abiding interest in elementary mathematics, on the teaching of which he exerted great influence both in Germany and elsewhere. The mathematical atmosphere in Europe in 1887 was one of great activity. It included a clash of ideals, the use of intuition and arguments borrowed from physical sciences, as represented by Bernhard Riemann (1826-1865) and his school, versus the ideal of strict rigorous proof as represented by Karl Weierstrass (1815-1897), then active in Berlin. Osgood throughout his mathematical career chose the best from the two schools, using intuition in its proper place to suggest results and their proofs, but relying ultimately on rigorous logical demonstrations. The influence of Klein on "the arithmetizing of mathematics" remained with Osgood during the whole of his later life. y m R(x) Osgood's thesis was a study of Abelian integrals of the first, second, and third kinds, based on previous work by Klein and Max Noether. He expresses in the thesis his gratitude to Max Noether for aid. He seldom mentioned the thesis in later life; on the one occasion that he mentioned it to me he tossed it off with "Oh, they wrote it for me." Nevertheless, it was part of the theory of functions, to which he devoted so much of his later life.

    William Osgood Aydelotte
By Allan G. Bogue and Gilbert White
AYDELOTTE WAS A LEADING figure in the development of social science history in the United States. Many historians consider themselves humanists or argue that theirs is a unique discipline. Others are social scientists in intellectual commitment and methods of research, and it was from this group that Aydelotte was the first to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Beneath the affiliative differences among historians lie disagreements as to whether history should be presented in narrative or analytical form, the degree to which historical evidence can serve as the basis for generalization and, indeed, what constitutes appropriate evidence. Aydelotte's career illuminates these issues. Publishing initially in the field of narrative diplomatic history, he emerged as the most innovative investigator of legislative behavior of his era in the history profession. EARLY LIFE AND TRAINING William Osgood remembered a household that was much open to students, to his father's colleagues, and, after the move to Swarthmore, to the varied visitors and dignitaries who move through leading college and university communities. The parents were kind and supportive and their son never lacked for the means to further his academic education. At the appropriate time in his musical training he received a Steinway grand piano. Nor did William lack family encouragement in making friends, although he found the process difficult in his younger years. Particularly after the move to Swarthmore, however, his parents' attention was often turned elsewhere. Troubled with recurrent poor health and an indifferent athlete, young Aydelotte experienced acute feelings of loneliness. Good literature was always at hand in great quantity in the Aydelotte home, however, and the boy read voraciously the works of leading nineteenth- and twentieth-century European and American authors.
