Three Fields Medalists are Members of the European Academy of Sciences.
At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), it was decided that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was Secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor. Consistent with Fields's wish that the awards recognize both existing work and the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medals to mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress. It is largely recognized that the Fields Medal is equivalent to Nobel Prize if it were awarded to mathematicians. Enrico Bombieri
Sergi Novikov

Novikov obtained his first degree in 1960 and then became a research student at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics in Moscow. In 1960-61 he [5]:- ... studied the writings of Whitney, Pontryagin, Thom and Milnor, all of which are written with great clarity. The completeness of the proofs in these papers was achieved with no detriment to understanding and without any artificial formalisation.

Sergei Novikov 's father was Petr Sergeevich Novikov who has a biography in this archive. Sergei's mother, Ludmila Vsevolodovna Keldysh, was also an outstanding mathematician who became a professor of mathematics and made important contributions to set theory and geometric topology . Both of Sergei's parents came from families with remarkable mathematical talents and several other members were noteworthy. We should mention especially Sergei's uncle Mstislav Keldysh who made major contributions to complex function theory, differential equations and applications to aerodynamics. Mstislav Keldysh was a leading Soviet scientist who was President of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR for many years. Coming from such mathematically talented families, it will come as no surprise to learn that Sergei was not the only one of Petr and Ludmila's five children to follow a career in the mathematical sciences. Their oldest child, Leonid, went on to be a leading international figure in solid state physics. Their second child, Andrei, became an algebraic number theorist while their third child was Sergei, the subject of this biography. Sergei had two younger sisters who both chose careers outside mathematics.

By JOAN PLOTNICK Staff writer Most Americans have never heard of Belarus, a small Ukrainian country on the Latvian border. But to 20 families in the Clayton area, Belarus is as familiar as the faces of the Belarussian children who stay in their homes each summer. A former Russian republic, Belarus was one of the areas hardest hit by the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident on April 26, 1986. Toxic radiation still lingers in the air, soil and food and can get into the milk supply from cows that eat contaminated grass. In 1991, the American Belarussian Relief Organization (ABRO) was founded to help Belarussian children. One way is bringing them to the United States for six weeks over the summer. In 1995, members of the Raleigh Baptist Association, one of the first groups in North Carolina to get involved with ABRO, made presentations to churches in the Clayton area asking for summer sponsorships. Several heeded the call.

    The Fields Medal
John Charles Fields Will established the Fields Medal, which has played the role of the Nobel Prize in Mathematics. The International Congress of Mathematicians at Zurich in 1932 adopted his proposal, and the Fields Medal was first awarded at the next congress, held at Oslo in 1936. Fields Medals were not awarded during World War II so the second Fields Medals were not awarded until 1950. Fields wished that the awards should recognize both existing mathematical work and also the promise of future achievement. To fit with these wishes Fields Medals may only be awarded to mathematicans under the age of 40. The winners of the medals are given below.

Many people think I'm an arrogant prick, and if you wanted to describe me in four words or less, this would be a pretty damn good shot. (although it wouldn't really be four words because 'I'm' is a conjunction ). Since you've made the effort, consciously or randomonly, to get to my extremely unhumble site, then I thought I might put the effort into writing something about myself. Since I am preoccupied with talking about myself, its a pretty good trade-off in my view. I write a lot of history essays, so I'm rather experienced in padding out large portions of text with absolute garbage, so you might find this extremely annoying habit here, as well as elsewhere on my website. Four years of Arts has instilled this annoying verbosity, that I hope will never go away. I choose to begin now.
    GENESIS
I was came screaming into the world on the 20th of March, 1981, in a hospital in Dublin, Ireland. My father, Thomas, must have been a bit curious about my paternity, as I came out yellow. I bet he thought my mother, Geraldine, might have been fooling around with some uncouth asian gentleman, until a doctor politely informed him I was born with jaundice . Those particularly interested in Astrology will realise that the 20th of March is the last day of the official Zodiac calendar. Those not interested in the zodiac, will probably not realise that celebrated russian mathematician
