Max Noether (1844-1921)
algebraic geometer
Max Noether was born in Mannheim to a family long engaged in a wholesale hardware business. At the age of fourteen, he was stricken by polio, but be completed the Gymnasium curriculum through home-study, and on his own, he began studying higher mathematics. He entered the University of Heidelberg in 1865 and received the Ph.D. degree there three years later. After serving on the faculty at Heidelberg for several years, he joined the faculty at the University of Erlangen and was an ordinarius (i.e., full professor) there from 1888 to 1919. In 1880 Max Noether married Ida Amalia Kaufmann. Their daughter Emmy Amalia Noether was born in 1882. Max Noether is remembered as one of the founders of algebraic geometry. To some extent, Emmy Noether extended some of her father's work, and in this connection, Hermann Weyl wrote, Noether's residual theorem was...fitted by Emmy into her general theory of ideals in arbitrary rings. This scientific kinship of father and daughter÷who became in a certain sense his successor in algebra, but stands beside him independent in her fundamental attitude and in her problems÷is something extremely beautiful and gratifying. The father was÷such is the impression I gather from his papers and even more from the many obituary biographies he wrote for the Mathematische Annalen ÷a very intelligent, warm-hearted man of many-sided interests and sterling education.

Written by Mandie Taylor, Class of 1998 (Agnes Scott College)
Traditionally, people consider mathematicians to be men. This, however, is not entirely true. Throughout history, there have been many women mathematicians who have contributed just as much as their male-counterparts. Even though their names might have been forgotten, their contributions to mathematics have not. One of these women mathematicians was German-born Emmy Noether. Emmy Noether was born in Erlangen, Germany on March 23, 1882. She was named Amalie, but always called "Emmy". She was the eldest of four children, but one of only two that survived childhood. Her brother, Fritz also made a career of mathematics. Her father was Max Noether, a noted mathematician of his time. Her mother was Ida Amalie, for whom Emmy was named. As a child, Emmy Noether did not concentrate on mathematics. She spent her time in school studying languages, with a concentration on French and English. Her mother taught her the traditional skills of a young woman of that time. She learned to cook, clean, and play the clavier. At the time of her graduation from high school, she passed a test that allowed her to teach both French and English at schools for young women. At the age of 18, Emmy Noether decided to take classes in mathematics at the University of Erlangen. Her brother, Fritz, was a student there, and her father was a professor of mathematics. Because she was a woman, the university refused to let Emmy Noether take classes They granted her permission to audit classes. She sat in on classes for two years, and then took the exam that would permit her to be a doctoral student in mathematics. She passed the test, and finally was a student in good standing at the University. After five more years of study, she was granted the second degree to a woman in the field of mathematics. The first graduated a year earlier.

Max Noether suffered an attack of polio when he was 14 years old and it left him with a handicap for the rest of his life. He attended the University of Heidelberg from 1865 and obtained a doctorate from there in 1868. After this he lectured at Heidelberg and moved from Heidelberg to a chair at Erlangen where he remained for the rest of his life. Max Noether was one of the leaders of nineteenth century algebraic geometry . He was influenced by Abel Riemann Cayley and Cremona . Following Cremona , Max Noether studied the invariant properties of an algebraic variety under the action of birational transformations. In 1873 he proved an important result on the intersection of two algebraic curves. Nine years later, in 1882, his daughter Emmy Noether was born. Emmy became interested in many similar topics to her father and generalised some of his theorems. Paul Gordan (1837-1912)
    king of invariant theory
Paul Albert Gordan, a mathematician at the University of Erlangen, was a close friend of Max Noether, and Emmy Noether was Gordan's only doctoral student. In his memorial address at Bryn Mawr College shortly after Emmy Noether's death, Hermann Weyl touched upon the influence of Emmy's father and of Gordan: Sided by side with Noether acted in Erlangen as a mathematician the closely befriended Gordan, an offspring of Clebsch's chool like Noether himself. Gordan had come to Erlangen shortly before, in 1874, and he, too, remained associated with that university until his death in 1912. Emmy wrote her doctor's thesis under him in 1907: On complete systems of invariants for ternary biquadratic forms; it is entirely in line with the Gordan spirit and his problems. The Mathematische Annalen contains a detailed obituary of Gordan and an analysis of his work, written by Max Noether with Emmy's collaboration. Besides her father, Gordan must have been well-nigh one of the most familiar figures in Emmy's early life, first as a friend of the house, later as a mathematician also; she kept a profound reverence for him though her own mathematical taste soon developed in quite a different direction. I remember that his picture decorated the wall of her study in Gšttingen. These two men, the father and Gordan, determined the atmosphere in which she grew up. Weyl goes on to contrast Gordan and Max Noether÷ Gordan was of a different stamp...impulsive and one-sided...a great walker and talker÷he like that kind of walk to which frequent stop at a beer-garden or a cafŽ belong. Either with friends, and then accompanying his discussions with violent gesticulations, completely irrespective of his surroundings; or alone, and then murmuring to himself and pondering over mathematical problems...
