Florence Nightingale, Nurse, Renewer of Society
18 May 1910
The commemoration of Florence Nightingale is controversial. On the one hand, she doubted or denied many of the central articles of the Creed. On the other hand, she believed in God and devoted her life to His service as she understood it. She was born in Florence on 12 May 1820 of upper-class English parents travelling through Italy, and named for her native city. ("Florence" was not an accepted first name at the time. Her sister was born in Naples and named "Parthenope," the Greek name for that city.) Florence was reared in the Unitarian Church, but later joined the Church of England. March 7. God called me in the morning and asked me would I do good for Him, for Him alone without the reputation. March 9. During half an hour I had by myself in my cabin, settled the question with God. April 1. Not able to go out but wished God to have it all His own way. I like Him to do exactly as He likes without even telling me the reason. May 12. Today I am thirtythe age Christ began his mission. Now no more childish things. No more love. No more marriage. Now Lord let me think only of Thy Will, what Thou willest me to do. Oh Lord Thy Will, Thy Will.

http://www.saunalahti.fi/arnoldus/nighting.html
Arno Forsius Florence Nightingale syntyi vuonna 1820 Firenzessä (engl. Nightingalen harras toivomus opiskella vuonna 1845 sairaanhoitoa raukesi tyhjiin. Varakkaaseen keskiluokkaan kuuluva perhepiiri ei hyväksynyt ajatusta, sillä Englannin sairaanhoitajien ammatillinen ja sosiaalinen taso oli perheen tyttären asemaa ajatellen sopimattoman heikko. Nightingale pääsi kuitenkin vuonna 1850 vierailemaan parin viikon ajan Saksassa Theodor Fliednerin johtamassa Kaiserswerthin diakonissalaitoksessa ja vuonna 1851 hän sai opiskella siellä neljän kuukauden ajan. Keväällä 1854 puhkesi ns. Krimin sota ja Englantia järkyttivät uutiset sairaiden ja haavoittuneiden sotilaiden huonosta hoidosta. Ranskalaisten joukkojen keskuudessa tilanne olikin melkoisesti parempi, sillä heillä oli käytössään vapaaehtoisia sairaanhoitajattaria. Silloin Englannissakin ilmoittautui huomattava määrä naisia vapaaehtoisiksi sairaanhoitajattariksi. Nightingale ryhtyi suunnittelemaan liikuteltavan ambulanssisairaalan viemistä Krimin niemimaalle ja hänen toivottiin samalla ottavan huolekseen sotilassairaaloiden hoidon Turkissa.

Født inn i overklassa

Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
Florence Nightingale received an unusually broad classical education from her wealthy father, but was confined to studying the social and health conditions of the day rather than putting her ideas into practice. Nursing was not then considered a respectable occupation for a young lady.
The Crimean War finally gave her the opportunity to demonstrate how trained nurses, proper hygiene and efficient organization could transform healthcare. She went on to instigate important reforms in the British Army and set up the Nightingale School of Nurses, which sent trained nurses around Britain and the world. Nightingale, Florence (1820-1910), British nurse, hospital reformer, and humanitarian.
Born in Florence, Italy, on May 12, 1820, Nightingale was raised mostly in Derbyshire, England, and received a thorough classical education from her father. In 1849 she went abroad to study the European hospital system, and in 1850 she began training in nursing at the Institute of Saint Vincent de Paul in Alexandria, Egypt. She subsequently studied at the Institute for Protestant Deaconesses at Kaiserswerth, Germany. In 1853 she became superintendent of the Hospital for Invalid Gentlewomen in London.
After the Crimean War broke out in 1854, Nightingale, stirred by reports of the primitive sanitation methods and grossly inadequate nursing facilities at the large British barracks-hospital at Üsküdar (now part of Istanbul, Turkey), dispatched a letter to the British secretary of war, volunteering her services in Crimea. At the same time, unaware of her action, the minister of war proposed that she assume direction of all nursing operations at the war front. She set out for Üsküdar accompanied by 38 nurses. Under Nightingale's supervision, efficient nursing departments were established at Üsküdar and later at Balaklava in Crimea. Through her tireless efforts the mortality rate among the sick and the wounded was greatly reduced.
At the close of the war in 1860, with a fund raised in tribute to her services, Nightingale founded the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses at Saint Thomas's Hospital in London. The opening of this school marked the beginning of professional education in nursing.

"Handmaiden of the Lord"
May 12, 1820
August 13, 1910
Brief Biography of
Florence Nightingale
orn in Florence, Italy on May 12, 1820 and baptized in the Church of England on July 4, that same year, Florence Nightingale felt her call from God at age 16 as an "inward tug" of mystical experience. She chose not to marry, to pursue her life's ministry of social action, which she described as "mankind creating mankind." She said, "Mankind must discover the organization by which mankind can live in harmony with God's purposes." Founder of modern, secular nursing, she described nurses as the "handmaidens of the Lord." In her early 30s she had already become Superintendent of the Institution for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in Distressed Circumstances in London, England. She streamlined the physical facility and improved the standard of nursing care and administration. Within two years she had become her country's leading authority on hospitals. A friend wrote of her in these years, " She must be a creature of another race . . . . doing things by impulse or some divine inspiration . . . . she seems too holy to be talked about as a mere wonder . . . . how straight He is sending His Spirit down into her as into the prophets and saints of old." She said of her life's ministry in 1873, "You say that mystical or spiritual religion is not enough for most people without outward form. And I may say I can never remember a time when it was not the question of my life. But the two thoughts which God has given me all my whole life have beenFirst, to infuse mystical religion into the form of others ( always thinking they would show it forth much better than I), especially among women to make them the 'handmaidens of the Lord.' "

(In English)
