1. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Saint Nicomedes
St. nicomedes, Roman martyr of an unknown era, venerated since at least the fifth century, feast day 15 September.

St. Nicomedes
Martyr of unknown era, whose feast is observed 15 September. The Roman Martyrologium and the historical Martyrologies of Bede and his imitators place the feast on this date. The Gregorian Sacramentary contains under the same date the orations for his Mass. The name does not appear in the three oldest and most important MSS. of the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum", but was inserted in later recensions ("Martyrol. Hieronymianum", ed. De Rossi-Duchesne, in Acta SS., Nov., II, 121). The saint is without doubt a martyr of the Roman Church. He was buried in a catacomb on the Via Nomentana near the gate of that name. Three seventh century Itineraries make explicit reference to his grave, and Pope Adrian I restored the church built over it (De Rossi, "Rome Sotterranea", I, 178-79). A titular church of Rome, mentioned in the fifth century, was dedicated to him ( titulus S. Nicomedis ). Nothing is known of the circumstances of his death. The legend of the martyrdom of Sts. Nereus and Achilleus introduces him as a presbyter and places his death at the end of the first century. Other recensions of the martyrdom of St. Nicomedes ascribe the sentence of death to the Emperor Maximianus (beginning of the fourth century). Acta SS., Sept., V, 5 sqq., Analecta Bollandiana, XI, 268-69; MOMBRITIUS, Sanctuarium, II, 160-61; Bibliotheca hagiographica latina, ed. Nicomedes Santa Cruz
Nicomedes Santa Cruz was born June 4, 1925 in Lima, Perú. A poet, folklorist, musicologist, composer and historian of Afro-Peruvian music and culture, he was responsible for the present popularity and resurgence of Afro-Peruvian music. In the 1950's, he began compiling and rejuvenating Afro-Peruvian cultural forms. Later, as a student and supporter of the Black conciousness movement, he used radio and television as forums for bringing many unknown Afro-Pervuians musicians to public attention.
In addition to being a preserver of Afro-Peruvian music, Nicomedes Santa Cruz was a great writer. He published numerous books of Afro-Latino culture and traditions. He has done comparisons of the origin of African influenced dances and rhythms of music from Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay. He is known as one of Perú's best poets. He also came from an important Afro-Peruvian family, the Santa Cruz family, a family with known for it's preservation on Black Peruvian culture. Nicomedes Santa Cruz passed away in 1992.

Adam of Caithness, OSB Cist. B (PC)
Died 1222. Saint Adam entered the Cistercians as a young man. Later he was abbot of Melrose until King William of Scotland appointed him bishop in a remote area over which he wanted to gain more power. As bishop, Adam tried to enforce canon and civil law, including the payment of tithes, which he increased gradually doubled. Of course, this led to a revolt. A mob forced its way into the bishop's house at Halkirke and burnt him and his followers to death. His body, although "roasted with fire and livid with bruises, was found entire under a heap of stones and buried honorably in the church." Thereafter, an unofficial cultus developed (Farmer).

Blessed Aichardus of Clairvaux, OSB Cist. (PC)
Died c. 1170. Aichardus received the Cistercian habit from the hands of Saint Bernard at Clairvaux. The founder sent Aichardus to several different foundations. When he returned to Clairvaux, Saint Bernard appointed him novice-master (Benedictines).

Conchoid of Nicomedes
A curve with polar coordinates
studied by the Greek mathematician Nicomedes in about 200 BC also known as the cochloid. It is the locus of points a fixed distance away from a line as measured along a line from the focus point (MacTutor Archive). According to common modern accounts, the conchoid of Nicomedes was first conceived around 200 B.C by Nicomedes, to solve the angle trisection problem. The name conchoid is derived from Greek meaning "shell", as in the word conch. The curve is also known as cochloid. From E. H. Lockwood (1961): The invention of the conchoid ('mussel-shell shaped') is ascribed to Nicomedes (second century B.C.) by Pappus and other classical authors; it was a favourite with the mathematicians of the seventeenth century as a specimen for the new method of analytical geometry and calculus. It could be used (as was the purpose of its invention) to solve the two problems of doubling the cube and of trisecting an angle; and hence for veery cubic or quartic prblem. For this reason, Newton suggested that it would be treated as a 'standard' curve. (*XahNote: Did Nicomedes use the curve to double the cube? Who used the name cochloid and in where?*)

Nicomedes I of Bithynia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Nicomedes I , the son of Zipoete, became the king of Bithynia (c. - c. 248 BC ) on the death of his father. He made himself master of the whole country and put to death his brother, who had set himself up as an independent ruler. He enlarged and consolidated the kingdom, founded the great city of Nicomedia as the capital, and fought successfully for some time with Antiochus I Soter of Syria. He invited the Gauls across the Bosporus to help him in his battles, and helped them to settle in Phrygia His reign seems to have been prosperous and uneventful; the year of his death is uncertain. NICOMEDES III.
NICOMEDES III. , Philopator, king of Bithynia, 91-74 B.C., was the son and successor of Nicomedes II. His brother Socrates, assisted by Mithradates, drove him out, but he was reinstated by the Romans (90). He was again expelled by Mithradates, who defeated him on the river Amneus (or Amnias) in Paphlagonia. This led to the first Mithradatic War, as the result of which Nicomedes was again restored (84). At his death he bequeathed his kingdom to the Romans, a legacy which subsequently brought about the third Mithradatic War. Justin xxxvii. 4, xxxviii.
