    Newton, Sir Isaac
    The Principia
Newton summarized his discoveries in terrestrial and celestial mechanics in his Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica [mathematical principles of natural philosophy] (1687), one of the greatest milestones in the history of science. In it he showed how his principle of universal gravitation provided an explanation both of falling bodies on the earth and of the motions of planets, comets, and other bodies in the heavens. The first part of the Principia is devoted to dynamics and includes Newton's three famous laws of motion ; the second part to fluid motion and other topics; and the third part to the system of the world, i.e., the unification of terrestrial and celestial mechanics under the principle of gravitation and the explanation of Kepler's laws of planetary motion. Although Newton used the calculus to discover his results, he explained them in the

People Buried or Commemorated - Sir Isaac Newton 1642-1727 Newton was born at Woolsthorpe in the parish of Colsterworth, Lincolnshire and educated in Grantham and at Trinity College Cambridge. He became a Fellow of Trinity in 1667 and was Lucasian Professor from 1669 to 1702. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1672, Newton served as its President from 1705 to 1727. He became Master of the Mint in 1699 and was knighted in April 1705. Newton is most commonly known for his conception of the law of universal gravitation, but his other discoveries and inventions in mathematics (e.g. the binomial theorem, differential and integral calculus), optics, mechanics, and astronomy place him at the very forefront of all scientists. His study and understanding of light, the invention of the reflecting telescope (1668), and his revelation in his Principia of the mathematical ordering of the universe are all represented on his monument in Westminster Abbey. Newton died at Kensington on 20 March 1727 and was buried in the Abbey on 28 March. Before the funeral his body lay in state in the Jerusalem Chamber and his coffin was followed to its grave by most of the Fellows of the Royal Society. The Lord Chancellor, two dukes and three earls were pall bearers.

Sir Isaac Newton [1643 New Style Calendar] Sir Isaac Newton stated that "If I have seen further it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants." Newton's extraordinary abilities enabled him to perfect the processes of those who had come before him, and to advance every branch of mathematical science then studied, as well as to create some new subjects. Newton himself became one of those giants to whom he had paid homage.

SIR ISAAC NEWTON
NEWTON, SIR ISAAC The study of Descartess Geometry seems to have inspired Newton with a love of the subject, and to have introduced him to the higher mathematics. In a small commonplace book, bearing on the seventh page the date of January 1663/1664, there are several articles on angular sections, and the squaring of curves and crooked lines that may be squared, several calculations about musical notes, geometrical propositions from Francis Vieta and Frans van Schooten, annotations out of Walliss Arithmetic of Infinities, together with observations on refraction, on the grinding of spherical optic glasses, on the errors of lenses and the method of rectifying them, and on the extraction of all kinds of roots, particularly those in affected powers. And in this same commoliplacebook the following entry made by Newton himself, many years afterwards, gives a further account of the nature of his work during the period when he was an undergraduate : July 4, 1699.By consulting an account of my expenses at Cambridge, in the years 1663 and 1664, I find that, in the year I664 a little before Christmas, I, being then Senior Sophister, bought Schootens Miscellanies and Cartes Geometry (having read this Geometry and Oughtreds Clavis clean over h~alf a year before), and borrowed Walliss works, and by consequence made these annotations out of Schooten and Wallis, in winter between the years 1664and 1665. At such time I found the method of Infinite Series; and in summer 1665, being forced from Cambridge by the plague, I computed the area of the Hyperbola at Boothby, in Lincoinshire, to two and fifty figures by the same method.

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
A Scientific Genius
By Ann Lamont
Creation
June-August, 1990 Isaac Newton is well known as one of the greatest scientists who ever lived. Less well known is his deep belief in God and his conviction that scientific investigation leads to a greater knowledge of God the Creator of the universe. Isaac Newton was born at Woolthorpe, Lincolnshire, England on Christmas Day 1642. On that cold winter night, the sick, premature baby seemed unlikely to live. Gradually, however, he gained strength to survive. But Isaac's first few years were a struggle. His mother had become a widow two months before Isaac was born. Even with the help of her own mother, she ha d difficulty caring for Isaac in addition to running their farm while the Civil War in England raged around them. Several years later, his mother married the minister from nearby North Witham, but Isaac remained at Woolthorpe with his grandmother. As he grew, however, he visited his mother frequently. He eagerly read books from his stepfather's well-stocked library, in addition to reading the Bible regularly.

Article Name : Newton, Sir Isaac Isaac Newton (1642-1727) is universally considered one of the best mathematicians who ever lived, and many scholars consider him the best mathematician ever. But in addition to his mathematical prowess, his insight into the physical world was no less a part of his greatness. Newton invented and applied a broad range of mathematics both to describe natural phenomena as well as to gain a deeper insight into it. He is also considered one of the greatest physicists who ever lived. Probably the only other man in history who could rival Newton’s contributions to both mathematics and physics was the Greek Archimedes (287 B.C. 212 BC). Newton was born Christmas Day 1642 on a farm in Woolsthorpe, England. Newton does not seem to have enjoyed a happy childhood. His father had died three months before he was born. While still a small boy, his mother remarried and Isaac was reared for some time by a grandmother. Nevertheless, Newton showed some academic promise and he entered Trinity College at age 18. It is thought that his education there was initially leading to a law degree. Newton did not distinguish himself academically, but his thirst for knowledge can be seen in this excerpt from his college notes: “Plato is my friend, Aristotle is my friend, but my best friend is truth”. Eventually an interest in mathematics was sparked and he came to read both contemporary books on mathematics as well as classical works like Euclid’s “Elements”. In short order Newton went from reading about mathematics to creating it, and by age 23 Newton had devised the binomial theorem and formed a framework for what is known today as differential calculus. At about this time Newton left for home because the bubonic plague had closed Trinity College. Over the next year or so Newton further developed his calculus, laid the foundation for his theory of gravitation, and performed optical experiments. The later endeavor led Newton to pronounce that white light is actually composed of a combination of many colors.

Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727)
Sir Isaac Newton, was born on Jan. 4, 1643 (N.S.; Dec. 25, 1642, O.S.), at Woolsthorpe, near Grantham, Lincolnshire, England. Perhaps the greatest scientific genius of all time, Newton made fundamental contributions to every major area of scientific and mathematical concern to his generation. Newton came from a family of modest yeoman farmers. His father died several months before he was born. Three years later his mother remarried and moved to a nearby village, leaving Isaac in the care of his maternal grandmother. Upon the death of his stepfather in 1656, Newton's mother removed him from grammar school in Grantham in hopes of training him to manage her now much-enlarged estate, but even then Newton's interests ran more toward books and mathematical diversions. His family decided that he should be prepared for the university, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in June 1661.

Sir Issac Newton
By Stanley L. Johnson, Jr Sir Isaac Newton, the culminating figure of the scientific revolution of the 17th century, was born on January 4, 1643 Woolsthrope, near Grantham, Lincolnshire, England. Many considered him to be the greatest scientific genius of all time. He made significant contributions to every major area of scientific and mathematical concern of his generation. He was raised by his grandmother. In 1661, at the age of 18, Newton enrolled in Trinity College, Cambridge. Despite the fact that the curriculum at Cambridge was still dominated by the philosophies of Aristotle, Newton began looking into areas that were, to his psyche, questionable. He became more familiar and with philosophies of Descartes, Gassendi, Boyle, Copernicus, and Galileo. Furthermore, due to the Plague, Newton didn't receive much clout until after he left Trinity College and moved back to Lincolnshire. Within 18 months he began revolutionary advances in mathematics, optics, physics, and astronomy. In Mathematics, Newton was instrumental in creating what we now know as Calculus. Even though Leibniz was given the credit for it, Newton had laid the foundation for elementary differential and anti-derivative (integral) calculus. Newton realized that the integration of a function, or it's area, is merely the inverse procedure to differentiating, or taking its derivative and finding the slope of the curve at any point on the line. Using differentiation as his platform, Newton began to produce simple analytical methods that became instrumental in finding areas, tangents, lengths and widths of curves, and their maximums and minimums points. At the age of 27, Newton became the Chairperson of the Mathematics Department at Trinity College.
