Dr. Rita Colwell's statement on recipients of Fields Medal and Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in Mathematics
I am pleased to congratulate Vladimir Voevodsky and Madhu Sudan on receiving the most distinguished prizes in the mathematical sciences. Their accomplishments reflect the recognition that mathematics underlies all fields of science and engineering, enabling progress in our economy, our industry and our lives. We are proud that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has supported the groundbreaking work of these honorees. The Fields Medal, the world's highest honor for mathematical research, rivals the Nobels of other sciences. Vladimir Voevodsky, currently at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., shares the 2002 Fields Medal with Laurent Lafforgue, a colleague in France. Dr. Voevodsky conducted his prize-winning research in algebraic geometry and number theory, developing novel ways to describe the geometric shapes of solutions to algebraic equations, with support from NSF grants. Madhu Sudan, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, is receiving the 2002 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, which recognizes outstanding work in the mathematical aspects of computer science. His work in advancing the theory of probabilistically checkable proofsa way to recast a mathematical proof in computer language for additional checks on its validityand developing error-correcting codes was accomplished with the support of an NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award and individual grants.

Acknowledgment Rolf Nevanlinna Prize The Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in mathematical aspects of information science was established by the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union IMU in April 1981. It was decided that the prize should consist of a gold medal and a cash prize similar to the ones associated with the Fields Medal and that one prize should be given at each International Congress of Mathematicians. One year later, in April 1982, the IMU acepted the offer by the University of Helsinki to finance the prize. The prize was named the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in honor of Rolf Nevanlinna (1895-1980), who had been Rector of the University of Helsinki and President of the IMU and who in the 1950s had taken the initiative to the computer organization at Finnish universities. On its obverse side, the medal represents Nevanlinna and bears the text "Rolf Nevanlinna Prize". In addition, there is in very small characters "RH 83". RH refers to the Finnish sculptor Raimo Heino (1932-95) who designed the medal, and 83 to the year 1983 when the first medal was minted. On the reverse side, the two figures are related to the University of Helsinki. On the University's seal in the lower right, the text "Universitas Helsingiensis" is readable. The seal is from the 17th century, except for the Cross of Liberty which was added to it in 1940. In the upper left part, the word "Helsinki" is in coded form. The name of the prize winner is engraved on the rim of the medal.

"Pure mathematics enjoys the luxury of studying its constructions, whether finite or infinite, in complete independence of all questions of efficiency." explained Jacob Schwartz, who spoke on Tarjan's work. "By contrast, theoretical computer science must ultimately concern itself with computing engines which operate with limited speed and data storage, and therefore must take efficiency as one of its central concerns. Two closely related activities, algorithm design and algorithm analysis, grow out of this inevitable concern." The awards were announced in 1982 even though the Warsaw Congress was not held until 1983. At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto, a resolution was adopted that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was Secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor. Consistent with Fields's wish that the awards recognize both existing work and the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medals to mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress.

Nevanlinna Prize This entry contributed by Brandon Healy The Nevanlinna Prize is awarded by the International Mathematical Union to outstanding contributors to the mathematical aspects of information science. The International Mathematical Union is the organization that awards the prestigious Fields medal , and both awards are presented at the International Congress of Mathematics. Winners receive a gold medal and cash prize similar to the prizes received by Fields Medal winners. The Nevanlinna prize was first presented in 1983 at the Warsaw congress. The International Mathematical Union has clarified the intent of the prize to be related to the mathematical aspects of information science, including the following.
1. All mathematical aspects of computer science (e.g.

Rolf Nevanlinna
Rolf Herman Nevanlinna October 22 May 28 ) is perhaps the most famous Finnish mathematician . He is particuarly appreciated for his work in theory of functions (i.e., complex analysis). Apart from mathematics , Nevanlinna took great interest in culture and politics . His opinions in politics were sometimes somewhat controversial, but his talents as an amateur musician were widely appreciated. See also:
