Archbishop William Laud,
Archbishop of Canterbury whose attempts to bring uniformity of worship and the "beauty of holiness" into the Anglican liturgy precipitated the slide into Civil War. Born at Reading, Berkshire, the son of a prosperous clothier, he attended Reading School, then St John's College, Oxford. Ordained as a priest in 1601, Laud rose through the Church principally through the patronage of Richard Neile, Bishop of Rochester. In 1617 he accompanied King James I on a visit to Scotland as one his chaplains. He was appointed Bishop of St David's in 1621 and became chaplain to George Villiers, Marquis (later Duke) of Buckingham the following year. Laud's career flourished on the accession of King Charles I in 1625. He officiated at Charles' coronation in place of Archbishop Williams, the Dean of Westminster, who had fallen from favour. Appointed to the Privy Council in April 1626, made Bishop of Bath and Wells, then Bishop of London in 1628, Laud became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1633. In addition to his Church preferments, he became increasingly powerful in affairs of state. He held several important offices close to the King and used his influence to secure preferments for his friends. Sir Francis Windebank was appointed Secretary of State in 1632, and William Juxon, Bishop of London, was appointed Lord High Treasurer in 1636. Laud's theology was influenced by the teachings of Jacob Arminius (1560-1609), a Dutch theologian who emphasised free will over predestination and an acceptance of ordered and uniform practices of worship. Laud's love of ceremony and harmonious liturgy - the "beauty of holiness" - was shared by King Charles, but it was hated by

William Neile was born at Bishopsthrope in the house of his grandfather who was Archbishop of York. He entered Wadham College, Oxford in 1652 where he was taught mathematics by John Wilkins and Seth Ward. In 1657 he became a pupil of law at the Middle Temple in London. He went on to become a member of the privy council of King Charles II. In 1657 he became the first to find the arc length of an algebraic curve when he rectified the cubical parabola. He communicated his results to Brouncker and Wren at the Gresham College Society, the Society based at Gresham College, London, which a few years later became the Royal Society . Neile's work on this appeared in Wallis 's De Cycloide in 1659. Neile was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663, one of the first members of this Society. In 1666 he became a member of the Council of the Royal Society . He sent a work on the theory of motion to the Society in 1669. As well as his mathematical work Neile made astronomical observations using instruments on the roof of his father's house, the 'Hill House' at White Waltham in Berkshire. He died in this house at the age of 32. Thomas Hearne, the English historian and antiquarian who was himself born in White Waltham 8 years after Neile's death, describes him as follows:-

Semicubical Parabola
A semicubical parabola is a curve of the form
(i.e., it is half a cubic, and hence has power ). It has parametric equations
and the polar equation
The evolute of the parabola is a particular case of the semicubical parabola also called Neile's parabola or the cuspidal cubic. In Cartesian coordinates , it has equation
which can also be written The Tschirnhausen cubic catacaustic is also a semicubical parabola. The semicubical parabola is the curve along which a particle descending under gravity describes equal vertical spacings within equal times, making it an isochronous curve . It was discovered by William Neile in 1657 and was the first nontrivial algebraic curve to have its arc length computed. Wallis published the method in 1659, giving Neile the credit (MacTutor Archive). The problem of finding the curve having this property had been posed by

This curve, sometimes called the semi-cubical parabola, was discovered by William Neile in 1657. It was the first algebraic curve to have its arc length computed. Wallis published the method in 1659 giving Neile the credit. The Dutch writer Van Heuraet used the curve for a more general construction. William Neile was born at Bishopsthrope in 1637. He was a pupil of Wallis and showed great promise. Neile 's parabola was the first algebraic curve to have its arc length calculated; only the arc lengths of transcendental curves such as the cycloid and the logarithmic spiral had been calculated before this. Unfortunately Neile died at a young age in 1670 before he had achieved many further results. In 1687 Leibniz asked for the curve along which a particle may descend under gravity so that it moves equal vertical distances in equal times.

Bishop of Durham
The post of Bishop of Durham has existed since the eighth century. After the Norman conquest the Bishop was made Prince-Bishop of the Palatinate of Durham . They had their own army, parliment, currency, and court system. The Prince-Bishop's authority was hedged after the English Civil War , and the Principality was abolished in . The Palatinate court system, however, survived until . Fort William College an orientalist training centre set up by Governor General lord wellesley in 1800 within the Fort William complex. Its object was to effect moral and intellectual improvement of the newly recruited European civil servants. Wellesley envisioned ruling British India efficiently with the help of an enlightened bureaucracy. Under the existing system the young civilians, who were mostly between fifteen and seventeen years of age, were posted to districts without giving them any institutional training in local history, languages and the art of administration. Wellesley felt that both academic and moral training were necessary to make the new arrivals capable of facing the challenge of colonial administration. He set up the College of Fort William, Calcutta in 1800. Like the calcutta madrasa of warren hastings and the Benaras Hindu College of Jonathan Duncan, Wellesley's college was not, in fact, a fully government institution. Its expenses were designed to have been met by a contribution from all the civilians in India and an uncertain allocation that was to come from the operation of the Government Printing Press. A Department was established for each major language and culture of India. For each Department there was one Professor and a couple of Assistant teachers. Persian, which was still used as the court language of India, had a Department headed by Neile B Edmonstone, then a Persian translator to the Government. His Assistant teacher was John H Harington, a Judge of Sadar Diwani Adalat and Francis Gladwin, a soldier diplomat. For Arabic studies, Wellesley engaged Lt John Baillie, who was considered to be the best Arabist after William Jones. The Hindustani Language Department was entrusted to John B Gilchrist, an Indologist of great repute. HT Colebroooke, the famous orientalist, was selected to head the Sanskrit Department. William Cary, a non-civilian missionary and a specialist in many Indian languages including Bangla, was selected to head the Department of Vernacular Languages. All the Departments had a number of
