William Neile was born at Bishopsthrope in the house of his grandfather who was Archbishop of York. He entered Wadham College, Oxford in 1652 where he was taught mathematics by John Wilkins and Seth Ward. In 1657 he became a pupil of law at the Middle Temple in London. He went on to become a member of the privy council of King Charles II. In 1657 he became the first to find the arc length of an algebraic curve when he rectified the cubical parabola. He communicated his results to Brouncker and Wren at the Gresham College Society, the Society based at Gresham College, London, which a few years later became the Royal Society . Neile's work on this appeared in Wallis 's De Cycloide in 1659. Neile was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1663, one of the first members of this Society. In 1666 he became a member of the Council of the Royal Society . He sent a work on the theory of motion to the Society in 1669. As well as his mathematical work Neile made astronomical observations using instruments on the roof of his father's house, the 'Hill House' at White Waltham in Berkshire. He died in this house at the age of 32. Thomas Hearne, the English historian and antiquarian who was himself born in White Waltham 8 years after Neile's death, describes him as follows:-

This curve, sometimes called the semi-cubical parabola, was discovered by William Neile in 1657. It was the first algebraic curve to have its arc length computed. Wallis published the method in 1659 giving Neile the credit. The Dutch writer Van Heuraet used the curve for a more general construction. William Neile was born at Bishopsthrope in 1637. He was a pupil of Wallis and showed great promise. Neile 's parabola was the first algebraic curve to have its arc length calculated; only the arc lengths of transcendental curves such as the cycloid and the logarithmic spiral had been calculated before this. Unfortunately Neile died at a young age in 1670 before he had achieved many further results. In 1687 Leibniz asked for the curve along which a particle may descend under gravity so that it moves equal vertical distances in equal times.

William Neile (1637-1670)
Born: 7th December 1637 at Bishopsthorpe, Yorkshire
Mathematician
Died: 24th August 1670 at White Waltham, Berkshire
White Waltham in Berkshire, where he died, in his thirty-third year, on 24th August 1670, “to the great grief of his father, and resentment of all virtuosi and good men that were acquainted with his admirable parts”. A white marble monument in the parish church of White Waltham commemorates him and an inscribed slab in the floor marks his burial-place. He belonged to the privy council of King Charles II. Hearne says of him, “He was a virtuous, sober, pious man, and had such a powerful genius to mathematical learning that had he not been cut off in the prime of his years, in all probability he would have equalled, if not excelled, the celebrated men of that profession. Deep melancholy hastened his end, through his love for a maid of honour, to marry whom he could not obtain his father's consent.” Edited from Leslie Stephens & Sidney Lee's "Dictionary of National Biography" (1891).

Until the time of the sailing of the "Unity" about 30 Scotch died each day

150 men. Unfortunately no list of these men exists but some can be identified
from the end of their servitude. A few of these were: John STEWART - worked at the Lynn iron works, purchased by John PYNCHON and taken to Springfield, MA where he died 21 Apr 1691 leaving no family Thomas HOLME/HUME sold to Henry SAYWARD of York for 30 pounds.
