Photo courtesy of The Walt Disney Company. Mumford passed away Monday, January 20, 2003, of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, after struggling with the illness for the past year. He not only left behind his wife and family, longtime friends and co-workers, but he also left behind a multitude of fans who are grateful for his contributions to Disney entertainment. Mumford spent his entire career working at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), rising through the ranks to the position of WDI Senior Principal Show Set Designer. He also wrote and produced (along with his longtime collaborator, Bruce Gordon) several books on Disney history, and was well known for his love of Disney lore and generosity in sharing his wealth of knowledge so freely. David (never, never "Dave") told me the story of how he, as a young boy, watched Walt talking about audio-animatronics on Walt Disney Presents. Walt stepped aside, and a curtain opened to reveal the dinosaurs we now see in the Primeval World exhibit. It was at that moment that David decided he wanted to become an Imagineer. When David was old enough, he went to work at Disneyland on the Submarine Voyage. As a second-generation Imagineer, David Mumford didn't have that luxury Uncle Walt was never peering over his shoulder as he labored on Star Tours or when he finalized plans for Ariel's Playground at Tokyo DisneySea. But Mumford, who died in January of a rare skin disease at age 46, drew on assets Disneyland's creators lacked. Raised in South Pasadena, he could rely on an imagination molded by untold childhood visits to the park. "In a way," says Marty Sklar, Disney vice chairman and Imagineering's principal creative executive, "Imagineers who came `along later, like David, became even more fanatical than those of us who worked with Walt, because they saw in Disneyland qualities they wanted to infuse in both their personal lives and in the attractions they created."

In addition to his achievements as a visiting professor in the U.S., Tokyo, Paris, and the U.K., he served as the Chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Harvard from 1981 to1984. Mumford was a MacArthur Fellow from 1987 to 1992 and served as president of the International Mathematical Union from 1995 to 1998. Since 1996, he has taught at Brown University. Mumford has received various honorary degrees, awards, and other honors, and is a member of several learned societies, including the London Mathematical Society and the National Academy of Sciences. Broad Area Colloquium For AI-Geometry-Graphics-Robotics-Vision Modeling the Illusive Thing Called `Shape': a Mathematician's View David Mumford Brown University Monday, November 11, 2002, 4:15PM TCSeq 200 http://robotics.stanford.edu/ba-colloquium/ Abstract When I first got involved with natural and computer vision, I discovered that no existing mathematical theory seems to express well our perception of two shapes being similar or to yield the features needed to recognize objects for vision applications. In the last decade, an interesting approach to deforming shapes was started by Miller and Grenander, using ideas from fluid mechanics. I want to outline some new results in this program and raise some problems. About the Speaker Professor Mumford received his PhD at Harvard University in 1961. He was a Higgins Professor of Mathematics with a joint appointment in Engineering and Applied Science at Harvard until 1997. Since then he has been a professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. Prof. Mumford has done work machine learning and natural intelligence, in particular the field of vision perception. Hi research focuses on statistical models for the variables of vision: direct models of the raw images, the object shapes, and the texture of object surfaces. Prof. Mumford has received numerous awards, among them the Fields Medal. He is a MacArthur Foundation Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
