    Notes on Life and Works
Sir Thomas Wyatt was born at Allington Castle, Kent, in 1503, the son of Henry Wyatt and Anne Skinner. He was educated at St. John's College Cambridge, become a diplomat in the service of Henry VIII about 1526 and travelled to Italy first in 1527. After a brief imprisonment for his affair with Anne Boleyn in 1536, the king's second wife who was executed for treason, Wyatt went to Spain as English ambassador to Charles V from 1537 to 1539. In 1541, after the fall of Thomas Cromwell, Wyatt was arrested again and charged with treason but his release followed shortly. He died October 11, 1542, and was buried at Sherborne. Having separated from his wife Elizabeth Brooke, daughter of Lord Cobham, Wyatt was survived by his mistress Elizabeth Darrell and their son Francis.

    John Muir:
    America’s Naturalist
    by Thomas Locker
    Introduction by Dr. Edgar Wayburn
Past President, The Sierra Club In a series of richly painted landscapes, Thomas Locker brings the world and words of John Muir to readers, both the young and the young at heart. Equally at home in the wildernesses of California and Alaska, Muir wrote charming lyrical descriptions of nature for the benefit of future generations. Muir recognized that wilderness should not only be appreciated but should be fought for as well. He sparked the preservationist movement in the United States and throughout the world, working with President Theodore Roosevelt to establish national parks and spearheading the founding of the Sierra Club, an organization that to this day carries on the work he began long ago of encouraging citizen action to protect the natural world. This book is the second in a series of illustrated books by Thomas Locker introducing readers to notable people who loved and wrote about the American land, and especially about the value of wilderness.

    http://library.uop.edu/ha/muirBooks.html
John Muir's Personal Library Muir descendants have given over 700 books that belonged to John Muir to the University of the Pacific Library. This is approximately half of the books known to have been in the working library that Muir left to his daughters. A bibliography of the collection is available in Holt-Atherton Special Collections. Many of the books are housed in the ornate Victorian bookcases that had been in the "scribble den" of the Muir family home in Martinez and are now in the Holt-Atherton Reading Room (shown above). Some books found in the collection date from Muir's days as a schoolboy in Scotland. Others include family Bibles, textbooks from his days as a student at the University of Wisconsin, books given to him by his friends during his early travel years, and the numerous books he gathered once he settled into life as a family man in Martinez. Many volumes contain Muir's handwritten notes and annotations. Muir often indexed ideas and phrases on the end-papers of his books, indicating the page and a sentence or passage, marking the idea that had captured his attention. Thus, Muir himself has given the scholar a guide to the literary origins of many of his important ideas. Many of the volumes are inscribed by the authors to Muir and indicate the influence and friendships Muir had as a national figure among other nineteenth and early twentieth century leaders. Contained in the collection are numerous works of well-known authors, poets, scientists, philosophers, and historians. Evidence of Muir's wide ranging interests are apparent. Works by Thomas Carlyle, Edward Gibbon, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Ruskin, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, and William Wordsworth are included in the collection. Muir's quest for information about science, philosophy, and literature led him to such authors as George Elliot, Sidney Lanier, Arthur Schopenhauer, Louis Agassiz, Charles Darwin, John Fiske, Asa Gray, Thomas Huxley, and Alfred Wallace.
