+ ab) where This should remind you of the definition of a Clifford algebra, and indeed, they're related - they have the same representations! This sets up a connection to spinors, which is why these Jordan algebras are called "spin factors". But anyway: if you think about it a while, you'll see that J(V) is isomorphic to the direct sum V + R equipped with the product (v,a) o (w,b) = (aw + bv, + ab) which is basically the lowbrow definition of a spin factor. Though Jordan algebras were invented to study quantum mechanics, the spin factors are also deeply related to special relativity: we can think of J(V) = V + R as "Minkowski spacetime", with V as space and R as time. The reason is that J(V) is naturally equipped with a dot product: (v,a) . (w,b) =

"Moufang Polygons "
Abstract: A generalized polygon is a spherical building of rank two. Equivalently, a generalized polygon is a bipartite graph whose diameter equals half the length of a shortest circuit. A generalized polygon of diameter three, it turns out, is just the incidence graph of a projective plane. There are several families of generalized polygons which are the buildings associated with simple algebraic groups of relative $k$-rank two and/or certain classical groups. Jacques Tits observed that these polygons all satisfy a condition he called the Moufang property. This is a generalization of a property first introduced in the 1930's by Ruth Moufang in her study of projective planes. We will describe the classification of Moufang polygons recently obtained in joint work with Professor Tits. Refreshments at 3:30 in 314 Kerchof Hall
