Augustus De Morgan 's father John was a Lieutenant- Colonel who served in India. While he was stationed there his fifth child Augustus was born. Augustus lost the sight of his right eye shortly after birth and, when seven months old, returned to England with the family. John De Morgan died when Augustus was 10 years old. At school De Morgan did not excel and, because of his physical disability ... he did not join in the sports of other boys, and he was even made the victim of cruel practical jokes by some schoolfellows. De Morgan entered Trinity College Cambridge in 1823 at the age of 16 where he was taught by Peacock and Whewell - the three became lifelong friends. He received his BA but, because a theological test was required for the MA, something to which De Morgan strongly objected despite being a member of the Church of England, he could go no further at Cambridge being not eligible for a Fellowship without his MA. In 1826 he returned to his home in London and entered Lincoln's Inn to study for the Bar. In 1827 (at the age of 21) he applied for the chair of mathematics in the newly founded University College London and, despite having no mathematical publications, he was appointed.

Augustus De Morgan was born in the month of June at Madura in the presidency of Madras , India; and the year of his birth may be found by solving a conundrum proposed by himself, "I was x years of age in the year x ." The problem is indeterminate, but it is made strictly determinate by the century of its utterance and the limit to a man's life. His father was Col. De Morgan, who held various appointments in the service of the East India Company . His mother was descended from James Dodson , who computed a table of anti-logarithms, that is, the numbers corresponding to exact logarithms . It was the time of the Sepoy rebellion in India, and Col. De Morgan removed his family to England when Augustus was seven months old. As his father and grandfather had both been born in India, De Morgan used to say that he was neither English, nor Scottish, nor Irish, but a Briton "unattached," using the technical term applied to an undergraduate of Oxford or Cambridge who is not a member of any one of the Colleges. When De Morgan was ten years old, his father died. Mrs. De Morgan resided at various places in the southwest of England, and her son received his elementary education at various schools of no great account. His mathematical talents were unnoticed till he had reached the age of fourteen. A friend of the family accidentally discovered him making an elaborate drawing of a figure in

Augustus De Morgan lost the sight of his right eye shortly after birth. At school he did not excel. De Morgan entered Trinity College Cambridge in 1823 at the age of 16. He received his B.A. but a theological test was required for the M.A., something to which De Morgan strongly objected. In 1826, he returned to his home in London and entered Lincoln's Inn to study for the Bar. In 1827, he applied for the chair of mathematics in the newly founded University College in London and, despite having no mathematical publications, he was appointed. He wrote a popular book Elements of arithmetic in 1830. In 1849, he published Trigonometry and double algebra , in which he gave a geometric interpretation of complex numbers. He also wrote a popular calculus book. In 1838, he defined and introduced the term "mathematical induction", putting a process that had been used without clarity on a rigorous basis. He recognized the purely symbolic nature of algebra and he was aware of the existence of algebras other than ordinary algebra. He introduced De Morgan's laws and his greatest contribution is as a reformer of mathematical logic. In 1866, he was a co-founder of the London Mathematical Society and became its first president. In the same year De Morgan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. De Morgan was never a Fellow of the Royal Society, as he refused to let his name be put forward. He also refused an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh.

Augustus DeMorgan Augustus DeMorgan was one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his time. He was the one that came up with the idea of using a slash to represent fractions, as in 1/5 and 3/7. In addition, he perfected the principle of Mathematical Induction and gave it its name in 1838. Today, the principle of Mathematical Induction is one of the most widely used methods of proof for proving statements and arguments. However, DeMorgan would be best remembered for his many contributions to the development of abstract symbolic logic; he and George Boole are regarded as the founders of this relatively new branch of Mathematics. His DeMorgan’s laws, which were named after him, stated: "The negation of an "and" statement is logically equivalent to the "or" statement in which each component is negated.
"The negation of an "or" statement is logically equivalent to the "and" statement in which each component is negated." DeMorgan’s laws were an important element in the field of symbolic logic. It made things easier for other mathematicians to study symbolic logic and made them more receptive towards this abstract and radical study. DeMorgan’s laws also played an important role in the study of sets theory that sprang up after his death.

IRA Augustus De Morgan was an important innovator in the field of logic. In addition, he had many contributions to the field of mathematics and the chronicling of the history of mathematics. Augustus De Morgan was born in Mandura, India, on June 27, 1806. His father was a colonel in the Indian Army. His family soon moved to England where they lived first at Worcester and then at Taunton. His early education was in private schools where he learned Latin, Greek, Hebrew, mathematics and a dislike of exams. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1823 and graduated four years later. After graduation, De Morgan reached the point of deciding what to do with the rest of his life. Dubious of competitive fellowships and master degrees, he refused to continue his education. Fearful of hypocrisy and religious bigotry, he also rejected his parents' wish of becoming a priest. After contemplating medicine and law, he finally decided to become a mathematician. In 1828, he was awarded the position of first Professor of Mathematics at University College in London. His time at the university was far from quiet. In 1831, he resigned on principle after another professor was fired without explanation. He regained his job five years later when his replacement died in an accident. He would resign again in 1861. As a teacher, he was highly praised at making mathematics alive and interesting to his students. In addition, he wrote textbooks on numerous subjects in mathematics and logic.

Should probability and logic be combined?
If so, how? Bayesianism tells us we ought to reason probabilistically. In that sense, probability theory is logic. How then does probability theory relate to classical logic and the various non-classical logics that also stake a claim on normative reasoning? Is probability theory to be preferred over other logics or vice versa? Is probability theory to be used in some situations, and the other logics in other situations? Or should probability be combined with other logics? These questions were important in the time of Augustus de Morgan. Indeed de Morgan himself argued that Aristotelian logic was unnecessarily restrictive in scope, and with his contemporary George Boole he began to broaden its horizons, initiating a rennaissance in logic. The title of his most important book bears witness to his vision of a comprehensive logic encompassing probability: "Formal Logic; or the calculus of Inference, Necessary, and Probable". While the above questions are not new, we now urgently require some answers. Artificial intelligence is one key discipline in which probability theory competes with other logics for application. It is becoming vitally important to evaluate and integrate systems that are based on very different approaches to reasoning, and there is strong demand for theoretical understanding of the relationships between these approaches.

Augustus De Morgan 's father John was a Lieutenant- Colonel who served in India. While he was stationed there his fifth child Augustus was born. Augustus lost the sight of his right eye shortly after birth and, when seven months old, returned to England with the family. John De Morgan died when Augustus was 10 years old. At school De Morgan did not excel and, because of his physical disability ... he did not join in the sports of other boys, and he was even made the victim of cruel practical jokes by some schoolfellows. De Morgan entered Trinity College Cambridge in 1823 at the age of 16 where he was taught by Peacock and Whewell - the three became lifelong friends. He received his BA but, because a theological test was required for the MA, something to which De Morgan strongly objected despite being a member of the Church of England, he could go no further at Cambridge being not eligible for a Fellowship without his MA. In 1826 he returned to his home in London and entered Lincoln's Inn to study for the Bar. In 1827 (at the age of 21) he applied for the chair of mathematics in the newly founded University College London and, despite having no mathematical publications, he was appointed.
