Dear Professor Neisendorfer, I write on behalf of this task force concerning the future of mathematics at the University of Rochester. Our broadly based group is extremely concerned about recent developments at your institution, and we hope that we can assist both your Department and the Administration to find a graceful solution. Please let us know what ways we can help, or how we can facilitate the help of others.

KURT OTTO FRIEDRICHS
September 28, 1901—January 1, 1983 BY CATHLEEN SYNGE MORAWETZ
This memorial of Kurt Otto Friedrichs is given in two parts. The first is about his life and its relation to his mathematics. The second part is about his work, which spanned a very great variety of innovative topics where the innovator was Friedrichs. PART I: LIFE Friedrichs stayed in Göttingen for five years. During this time he completed his first paper clarifying the logical sig-nificance of Einstein’s general covariance postulate (1927,1) and then wrote his dissertation on boundary and eigen-value problems for elastic plates (1927,2). This was followed by a paper with Hans Lewy (1927,3) on initial value problems for linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. Those first three papers demonstrate most of Friedrichs’s lifetime in mathematics—the first on the fundamental laws of the nature of matter, the second on applied mathematics viewed through analysis, and the third on basic theorems of wave propagation.

November 11, 1999 SYMPOSIUM Math turns 100 BY SONO MOTOYAMA Depending on how you want to count it, the mathematics department last month celebrated its 100th year or 250 years of math at Penn. In 1899, as both the discipline and the University evolved, a separate mathematics department emerged at Penn and the first chairman was named. Dyson, emeritus professor of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and also an award-winning author, seemed to be making a one-man bid to return mathematics to its roots by reconnecting it with other areas of study. In a series of talks over two days, the British-born Dyson spoke of mathematics in relation to chemistry, biology, ecology, physics and astronomy. The afternoon session featured remarks by President Judith Rodin and the presentation of University Medals for Distinguished Achievement to Dyson and Morawetz and Department of Mathematics Centennial Medals to Andrews, Dyson, Morawetz and Vogelstein. A banquet at the Inn at Penn followed the afternoon session.

December 10, 1998 Her work has also contributed fundamentally to the mathematical theory of scattering. This subject describes how waves interact with obstacles or changes in the medium. It provides the framework for analyzing many techniques for remote sensing, including ultrasound and radar. In commenting on her award, Professor Morawetz said, "This is an occasion of great moment for me. I am filled with gratitude to all those, and there were a great many, who helped me over many years, and I am proud to be the first woman mathematician to receive the medal. My biggest wish would be that it could help move more women forward in mathematics, be it in grade school or graduate school." Founded in 1888 to further mathematical research and scholarship, the 30,000-member AMS fulfills its mission through programs and services that promote mathematical research and its uses, strengthen mathematical education, and foster awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life.
