Francis Fukuyama's famous "end of history" thesis may be open to debate, but it could not be postulated at all, not even as a flight of academic fancy, if it had not been for Lady Thatcher. Without her presence on the world's stage during the crucial decade of 1979 to 1989 (along with Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II), the proposition that global capitalism and, as its concomitant, liberal democracy, might be the last word in human social organization would not merely be debatable, as it now is, but a nullity.
