Jonas Moore became clerk to the Chancellor of Durham. In 1640, at the age of 13, he took up the study of mathematics. Moore was greatly influenced by Oughtred in his mathematical studies. In 1647 he became mathematics tutor to the Duke of York, brother of the future King Charles II, but he did not hold this job for very long since he was removed from the post by political intrigue. Indeed this was a time of political turmoil in England with battles and religious argument. Only two years later Charles I was executed and his son proclaimed Charles II by the Scots in defiance of the English. Charles II was defeated by Cromwell in 1650 and by 1651 was in exile in France. After loosing his post as tutor to the Duke of York (whose father Charles I was still King at this time) Moore went to London where he hoped to make a living as a teacher of mathematics. However, he found it difficult to find sufficiently many pupils so Moore was happy to be appointed as a surveyor in 1649. His task was to work on the draining of the Fens, a natural region of about 40,100 sq km of reclaimed marshland in eastern England between Lincoln and Cambridge. Around the same time as he took up this post as a surveyor, he published a mathematical textbook

Jonas Moore
Sir Jonas Moore was born at Whitelee, in Lancashire, towards the bishopric of Durham. He was inclined to mathematics when a boy, which some kind friends of his (whom he mentions in the preface of his first edition of his Arithmetic , and Edmund WyId esquire) and afterwards Mr Oughtred, more fully informed him; and then he taught gentlemen in London, which was his livelihood. He was a clerk under Dr Burghill, Chancellor of Durham. Parson Milbourne, in the bishopric, put him upon the mathematics, and instructed him in it. Then he came to the Middle Temple, London, where he published his Arithmetic , and taught it in Stanhope Street. After this, he got in with the Lord Gorges, Earl of Bedford, and Sir Thornas Chichele, for, the surveying of the Fens from Captain Sherbourne. Mr William Gascoigne (of the north, I think Yorkshire), a person of good estate, a most learned gentleman, who was killed in the Civil Wars in the king's cause, a great mathematician, and bred by the Jesuits at Rome, gave him good information in mathematical knowledge. When the great level of the Fens was to be surveyed, Mr WyId aforesaid who was his scholar and a member of parliament was very

SIR JONAS MOORE, KNIGHT, OF PENDLE FOREST.
By Dr. J. A. LAYCOCK. February 19th 1901.
[Editor is responsible for this summary. The paper was heard with great interest by the members of the Club who are interested in antiquarian and archaeological studies. It is a monument of patient research, and includes a mass of details transcribed from various registers which the narrow limits of space do not allow to appear here. Dr. Laycock will be glad if members who discover facts bearing on any of the Moores of Pendle Forest, will communicate with him at Sabden.] From his epitaph we gather that Jonas Moore was born at Whitelee, February 8th, 1617. In early life he was clerk under Dr. Burghill, Chancellor of Durham. "In a solitary retyredness with a settled resolution I fell upon the studyes Mathematicall, animated thereto by the promised helpe of Mr. William Millburne, Minister of Brauncepeth, in the county of Durham : my most worthy friend, and a great Master in all parts of Learning, who not many weeks after departed this life; leaving me either in choise to give over my journey or travel without guide or companye ; and a long time did I wander in the by-paths of other men's mechanicall practises, till at last, by a most happy accident, I had Mr. Oughtred's Clavis Mathematicoe bestowed upon me, by which I unlocked the mysteries of the Auncients and set myself in the highway of perfection ; unto which book and to the author's most absolute favours I owe all the mathematicall knowledge I have." (Whitaker pp. 528-9.)

12. Sir Jonas Moore And Towneley
SIR jonas moore and TOWNELEY. jonas moore was born at White Lee inPendle in 1617. jonas moore left Pendle some time after 1647.
http://www.burnley.gov.uk/towneley/tryall/jmhere.htm
SIR JONAS MOORE and TOWNELEY
Jonas Moore was born at White Lee in Pendle in 1617. Only a few years before his birth, the area was notorious as the haunt of witches. In August 1612, the Pendle witches - six women and one man - were tried at Lancaster and sentenced to death for witchcraft. Hugh Moore, supposedly one of their victims was probably Jonas Moore's grandfather.
Jonas may have gone to Burnley Grammar School but no records of the school survive for the 1620s. He left Pendle to work in Durham as a clerk after he left school but returned to Pendle in the 1640s. At that time he made use of Christopher Towneley's library at Carr Hall, see local map
Jonas Moore and Christopher Towneley rescued the papers of astronomers William Gascoigne, Jeremiah Horrox and William Crabtree after Crabtree's death. Jonas Moore left Pendle some time after 1647. He took his share of the astronomical papers with him and they were published in London. Jonas also wrote books himself and this picture is from the first edition of his arithmetic book published in 1650. In the 1650s Jonas Moore helped to drain the fens of Norfolk and he eventually made a lot of money as a surveyor. In 1666 he helped to survey London after the Great Fire. He became the King's Surveyor General of the Ordnance in 1669 and was knighted in 1673.
There is no documentary evidence that Jonas Moore ever visited Towneley Hall but it is possible that he visited in the 1670s. One letter from Sir Jonas at the Tower of London to Richard Towneley at Towneley Hall, dated November 1675, still survives. Jonas sent his regards to Richard's brothers and Mr. Giffard. Peter Giffard was the Towneley family priest. This suggests that he had met them all at Towneley. In May 1675, Jonas Moore released his half-share of Whitelee and lands adjoining to his brother Hugh Moore. It is possible he visited the area after his father died, probably in 1672.
