Gaspard Monge
9 mai 1746 - 28 juillet 1818
Monge is considered the father of differential geometry because of his work where he introduced the concept of lines of curvature of a surface in 3-space.
He developed a general method of applying geometry to problems of construction. Monge's Geometrie descriptive Geometrie descriptive, which is now known as orthographic projection, the graphical method used in modern mechanical drawing.
Monge served on the committee that established the metric system and he also accompanied Napoleon to Egypt to set up educational facilities there.

Monge, Gaspard French mathematician and chemist, the founder of descriptive geometry. His application of analysis to infinitesimal geometry also paved the way for later developments.
In 1796, Monge's friendship with Napoleon began. He was sent to the newly conquered Italy as a member of various commissions. In 1798 he assisted in the preparation for the Egyptian campaign; he then accompanied Napoleon and was appointed president of the Institut d'Egypte established in Cairo. Monge also went with Napoleon on expeditions to the Suez region and Syria in 1799. Subsequently Napoleon appointed him a senator. When Napoleon was overthrown in 1815, Monge was discredited.
Independently of French chemist Antoine Lavoisier, Monge synthesized water 1783, but he also worked with Lavoisier in 1785 on the synthesis and analysis of water. Monge quickly embraced Lavoisier's new chemistry and played an energetic part in getting it accepted.
Monge asserted the autonomy of analytical geometry as a separate branch of mathematics. In particular, he devoted himself to the families of surfaces as defined by their mode of generation, and the properties of surfaces and space curves. He also established the distinction between ruled surfaces and developable surfaces.

French chemist, mathematician, and physicist. With Lavoisier , he performed experiments to determine the composition of water. He was a specialist in three dimensional geometry, and invented three views now standard in mechanical drawing. He was the first to consider the isosceles tetrahedron (Altshiller-Court 1979, p. 300). His important treatise Berthollet . He was also a counselor and friend of Napoleon. Berthollet Lavoisier

He was distinguished for his geometrical research, which laid the foundations of modern descriptive geometry, a field essential to mechanical drawing and architectural drawing. He also made important contributions to differential geometry and inspired his pupils, who included J. B. Biot, J. V. Poncelet, and C. Dupin, to new advances in several branches of geometry. He was professor of mathematics (1768) and of physics (1771) at M©zi¨res. One of the founders of the ‰cole polytechnique, he served there as professor of descriptive geometry. From 1792 to 1793 he was minister of marine. He was a close and loyal friend of Napoleon and was stripped of all his honors and positions following the restoration of the monarchy in 1815. He wrote Feuilles d'analyse appliqu©e   la g©ometrie (1795) and G©ometrie descriptive (1799).

    Gaspard Monge (1746 - 1818)
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Gaspard Monge In 1780 he was appointed to a chair in mathematics in Paris, and this with some provincial appointments which he held gave him a comfortable income. The earliest paper of any special importance which he communicated to the French Academy was one in 1781, in which he discussed the lines of curvature drawn on a surface. These had been first considered by Euler in 1760, and defined as those normal sections whose curvature was a maximum or a minimum. Monge treated them as the locus of those points on the surface at which successive normals intersect, and thus obtained the general differential equation. He applied his results to the central quadrics in 1795. In 1786 he published his well-known work on statics. Monge eagerly embraced the doctrines of the revolution. In 1792 he became minister of the marine, and assisted the committee of public safety in utilizing science for the defence of the republic. When the Terrorists obtained power he was denounced, and escaped the guillotine only by a hasty flight. On his return in 1794 he was made a professor at the short-lived Normal school, where he gave lectures on descriptive geometry; the notes of these were published under the regulation above alluded to. In 1796 he went to Italy on the roving commission which was sent with orders to compel the various Italian towns to offer pictures, sculpture, or other works of art that they might possess, as a present or in lieu of contributions to the French republic for removal to Paris. In 1798 he accepted a mission to Rome, and after executing it joined Napoleon in Egypt. Thence after the naval and military victories of England he escaped to France.
