Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive. Despois dos seus estudios elementais, profundou en lóxica en Saumur e, a partir do 1684, foi a París a tomar clases particulares de matemáticas de Ozanam. Como protestante tivo que marchar a Inglaterra no ano 1685 como consecuencia da expulsión dos Hugonotes. Alí foi elixido membro da Royal Society en 1697. De Moivre foi un dos pioneiros no desenvolvemento da xeometría analítica e do cálculo de probabilidades. No seu libro The Doctrine of Chance publicado en 1718, de Moivre dá por primeira vez a definición de independencia probabilística e moitos problemas sobre xogos de azar. En Miscellanea Analytica (1730) aparece a famosa fórmula incorrectamente atribuída a Stirling, usada por de Moivre para obte-la distribución normal como aproximación da binomial. De Moivre é moi lembrado hoxe pola súa fórmula para (cos x + i sen x)n que ligou a trigonometría coa análise matemática.
