Georg Mohr Born: 1 April 1640 in Copenhagen, Denmark Died: Show birthplace location Previous (Chronologically) Next Biographies Index Previous (Alphabetically) Next Main index Georg Mohr was educated by his parents and learnt enough mathematics from them to want to study further. He went to Holland intending to study mathematics under Huygens . He also studied in France and England. Mohr was little known as a mathematician. His book Euclides danicus published in 1672 was forgotten about until discovered in a bookstore in 1928. Perhaps no copies were ever sold! The book contains the theorem and its proof that all Euclidean constructions can be carried out with compasses alone. Mascheroni , who is credited with this result, did not prove it until 125 years after Mohr's book was published. Mohr spent part of his life in Holland and part in Denmark. He fought in the Dutch-French wars around 1672 and was a prisoner of war. He was back in Denmark around 1681 but, having decided not to accept a post as supervisor of the king's shipbuilding, he returned to Holland in 1687. He corresponded with Tschirnhaus whom he had met on several occasions in Holland, France and England. In 1695 Mohr accepted a job from

Georg Mohr-Konkurrencen Hvem var Georg Mohr? Georg Mohr var en dansk matematiker der levede 1640 til 1697. Han blev født i København og viste tidligt interesse for matematik. I 1662 tog han til Holland for at studere matematik og filosofi. Her blev han til omkring 1681 hvor han drog til København igen. Her blev han tilbudt et job ved kongens (Christian V) skibsbyggeri. Dette tog han ikke imod, han foretrak det frie liv som matematiker og filosof. I 1687 blev Mohr gift, til trods for at han tidligere havde udtrykt stor forundring over vennen og matematikeren Tschirnhaus' ægteskab. Han drog derefter igen til Holland sammen med sin nye kone, hvor han efter store overvejelser accepterede et tilbud fra Tschirnhaus om arbejde i Tyskland. Her døde han den 26. januar 1697. Man ved ikke om Mohr har gået på universitetet i København før han drog til Holland. I Holland studerede han ved universitetet i Leiden, bl.a. under kendte personer som Huygens og Spinoza. Sammen med Tschirnhaus som han mødte i Holland, har han også været i England og Frankrig, hvor han mødte Leibniz. Mohrs søn har skrevet en biografi af sin fader, hvori han bl.a. nævner at Mohr har skrevet 3 bøger. I dag er den ene af disse deværre ikke kendt. De to, man i dag kender til har titlerne

His father was hospital inspector and shopkeeper David Moer, but his mother isn’t mentioned anywhere. Mohr’s grandfather was of noble Scottish origin. 1662: From this year Mohr studied math and philosophy in Holland. And here he became good friends with the mathematician, physicist and philosopher E.W. Baron von Tschirnhaus, who had a very big influence on the rest of Mohr’s life 1672-1673: Mohr was taken as a French prisoner of war, because he got involved in The Netherlands’ conflict with France. That period gave Mohr injuries of a permanent character. 1672: Mohr wrote his first and most famous publication, "Euclides Danicus", in Danish and Dutch. This publication was dedicated to the Danish King Chr. V, as an expression of great love to his homeland. Later reading from this book, you will see that he was much ahead of the science of the times. 1681: Mohr came back to Copenhagen, and here he was offered to be inspector at the royal shipyard by no other than King Chr. V. But as soon as 1687 he went back to Holland with his new wife.

EKSTRA-MATEMATIK FOR LYST Elev fra Esbjerg Gymnasium nr 2 i hele landet ved matematikkonkurrencen for elever i de 4 gymnasieuddannelser Thomas Dueholm Hansen fra 3z opnåede 19 ud af 20 mulige points ved Georg Mohr konkurrencen i matematik I dag offentliggøres resultatet af den landsdækkende konkurrence i matematik. I alt 900 elever har på tværs af de 4 gymnasieuddannelser deltaget i konkurrencen, hvis formål er at udfordre de dygtigste elever med opgaver af en sværhedsgrad, de ikke møder i den daglige undervisning. Thomas Dueholm Hansen fra 3z på Esbjerg Gymnasium blev nr 2 med 19 ud af 20 mulige points kun overgået af Martin Jacobsen fra Virum Gymnasium, der opnåede de maksimale (og yderst sjældne) 20 points. Vinderne deltager ved et opfølgende matematikarrangement på Syddansk Universitet fra søndag den 22. februar til og med onsdag den 25. februar, hvor der finder præmieoverrækkelse sted. Endvidere får vinderne mulighed for at deltage i den nordiske matematikkonkurrence, der afholdes i april måned. Thomas Dueholm Hansen vil få overrakt diplom for det flotte resultat ved morgensamling på skolen på torsdag kl. 9.50.
