August Ferdinand Möbius (1790-1868) - Mathematics and the Liberal Arts
To expand search, see Germany in the 1800s . Laterally related topic: Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) The Mathematics and the Liberal Arts pages are intended to be a resource for student research projects and for teachers interested in using the history of mathematics in their courses. Many pages focus on ethnomathematics and in the connections between mathematics and other disciplines. The notes in these pages are intended as much to evoke ideas as to indicate what the books and articles are about. They are not intended as reviews. However, some items have been reviewed in Mathematical Reviews , published by The American Mathematical Society. When the mathematical review (MR) number and reviewer are known to the author of these pages, they are given as part of the bibliographic citation. Subscribing institutions can access the more recent MR reviews online through MathSciNet Symmetry Cult. Sci. (1994), no. 1, 312. SC: 00A69 (01A99), MR: 1 309 239. Discusses the history and philosophy of origami and then (in a little more depth) discusses some of its applications. The author discusses applications in math and science education, and also in art, design, and technology. A particularly interesting application of paper-folding and the theory of polyhedra is in music education, where one researcher devised "a 'tower' of five octahedra, to illustrate some basic concepts in musicology. His inspiration was from a work by Möbius written in 1861. Ganter's compound polyhedron illustrates geometrically the following concepts and their connections: the vertices correspond to the notes of the chromatic scale, the edges corresponds to the thirds and fifths, and the triangular faces correspond to the triads." He mentions that M. C. Escher was interesting in construction paper models (though it is not really clear how deep that interest lay). It is interesting that the well-known book by T. Sundara Row entitled

August Mobius was born on this day in 1790. Someone once welded me a Mobius band. It was a nice present and I don't understand how I could have lost it, so I probably gave it away. In case you don't know what a Mobius band is, here's how to make one. Cut a strip of paper and fasten the two ends together, but first take one half twist. These pictures were taken from
John Robinson and Ronnie Brown -

Making the Mobius Band
The man who welded me the Mobius band told me to pretend I was a fly and to start walking along the band. I walked my fingers around and around, AND AROUND AND AROUND!!! Why, it never ended! There was no end to a Mobius band. That is the amazing thing about them: they are one-sided, one-edged surfaces! How can you make something with two sides and two edges into something with one side and one edge and do nothing to reduce its size? It sounds impossible. I love Mobius bands. Incidentally, some people refer to them as Mobius strips. Same same.

Question
What is the Mobius Strip? Asked by: Kartikeya Shah Answer Very roughly a surface is orientable if it has two sides so that, for example, is it possible to paint it with two different colours. A sheet of paper or the surface of a sphere are examples of orientable surfaces. A Mobius strip is a non-orientable surface: you can build one with a strip of paper (twist the strip and glue end together to form a ring) and verify that it has only one side: it is not possible to paint it with two colours. In short a Mobius strip only has one side and one edge. Ants would be able to walk on the Mobius strip on a single surface indefinitely since there is no edge in the direction of their movement. Just like what M.C. Escher depicted in his famous picture (shown on the right.) Mobius strip was named after the astronomer and mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius (1790-1868). He came up with his 'strip' in September 1858. Independently, German mathematician Johann Benedict Listing (1808-1882) devised the same object in July 1858. Perhaps we should be talking about the Listing strip instead of the Mobius strip. http://www.mobiusproductsandservices.com/tms.html
The Mobius Strip was discovered in 1858 by German mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Mobius (1790-1868). The mathematical equation is known as The Mobius Transformation, also known as bilinear transformation or linear fractional transformation. (Webster's dictionary:" A map of the complex plane to itself in which a point "z" is mapped to a point "w" by w=(az+b)/(cz+d), where a,b,c, and d are complex numbers and ad-bc does not equal zero.") It is a continuous loop with one surface and one edge formed by twisting one end of a long, thin rectangular strip 180 degrees (1/2 twist) and attaching this end to the other. This fascinating shape expresses Transformation. Today the Mobius Strip has been chosen as the Universal symbol of recycling. It represents the process of transforming waste materials into useful resources. On a personal level, the Mobius strip represents a willingness to move WITH the constantly changing cycles in our Life process, transforming our challenges into useful solutions. The Mobius Strip reveals planetary transformation,as well. Historically, there has always been Earth
changes,i.e. natural re-structuring of land and ocean masses, tide changes, weather changes, seasonal changes, etc. The Mobius Strip shape is symbolic of eternal change within stillness itself.

http://www.exo.net/~pauld/activities/mobius/mobius.html
Mobius A Mobius strip is a band of paper that's deceptively simple in its appearance and exceptionally twisted in its properties. Introduction The properties of a twisted strip of paper depend a great deal on the number of times it is twisted. Counting the twists is an interesting exercise that illustrates Paul's first mathematical principle,"Counting is difficult." Material
  • Several strips of paper ( a good size is 3 cm wide and 30 cm long)
    • if you use brown packing tape with adhesive on one side you can skip the tape below.
scissors tape 2 felt tip pens in different colors
Part 1 Warming up To Do and Notice Look at your the strip of paper. Count the edges: Start coloring an edge at one point with your pen, if you color the entire edge and never have to lift the pen from the paper then the paper has one edge. A pointy vertex does not divide an edge into two parts. Count the sides: Start coloring one side, fill it with color but don't cross over any sharp edges. When you are done, one side will be colored the other will not. So, the strip has 2 sides. A simpler way to test for the number of sides is to draw a line along one side. If any point can be reached from the line without crossing an edge then that point is on the same side as the line. Draw a line on one side of the paper, points on the other side cannot be reached without crossing an edge, this means the paper has two sides.
