The Red House Mystery
Author Info: A.A. Milne
[Alan Alexander]
Of course it's very hampering being a detective, when you don't know anything about detecting,
and when nobody knows that you're doing detection, and you can't have people up to
cross-examine them, and you have neither the energy nor the means to make proper inquiries; and,
in short, when you're doing the whole thing in a thoroughly amateur, haphazard way.
A.A. Milne (The Red House Mystery) A.A. Milne is, of course, best remembered for his series of Winnie the Pooh tales. In addition, he wrote for the famous British humor magazine Punch, was a fine playwright and, though he served in WWI, became an outspoken pacifist. In the midst of all this, he wrote one of the classic English drawing room mysteries The Red House Mystery . The book ends on a note which seems to imply that further adventures will follow, but sadly none did. The Red House is a British manor, home to Mark Ablett, and gathering place for his fun loving friends. But the bucolic setting is disrupted when Ablett's long lost brother, black sheep of the family, is murdered and Mark goes missing. Two guests, Antony Gillingham, a sort of Holmsian jack of all trades, and Bill Beverley, a mildly dense Watson-like sidekick, take it upon themselves to solve the crime. What follows is a reasonably dated but still amusing "intuitive" mystery. Raymond Chandler apparently went out of his way to attack the story as one of the worst examples of the genre, wholly lacking in genuine criminological methodology and requiring enormous intuitive leaps on the part of the "detectives". Still, take it for what it is and it offers a pleasant enough reading experience.

http://histclo.hispeed.com/bio/m/bio-milne.html
Figure 1.Christopher is pictured here with his father and Edward bear. I'm not sure just what kind of outfit that he is wearing.
Christopher Milne (1920-96)
Christopher Robin Milne was the son of A.A. Milne. He was known to his family as "Billy Moon." The "Moon" part came from the way Christopher said the family name when he was little. "Billy" was the family's name for him, because they originally wanted to christen him William. This is a picture of A.A. Milne and Christopher (with a certain Mr. Edward Bear). Christopher Milne died in 1996.
Poem
This poem was written for Christopher by Brian Biddle. I found it in the alt.fan.pooh newsgroup.
A Bear and His Boy
Brian Biddle
It seems so long since holidays in Hundred Acre Wood
When you and I, and all our friends, would have adventures there.
And even if it rained or snowed, the times were always good,
Life was always magical, for a small boy and his bear.
But I never thought that all we had, could not forever be.
I'm just a bear of little brain and these things bother me.
They tell me you have gone away and never will return.

Question #65: What's Winnie-the-Pooh's Real Name?

Isn't the real name of Winnie-the-Pooh, in fact: Edward Bear?
T. Greschke
Answer #65:

Very good! You are referring to Christopher Robin Milne's teddy bear "Edward Bear" (the stuffed animal you see him dragging up and down the stairs in the illustrations). In the introduction to the book "Winnie-the-Pooh", author A.A. Milne writes " Well, when Edward Bear said that he would like an exciting name all to himself, Christopher Robin said at once, without stopping to think, that he was Winnie-the-Pooh. And he was.
In the same sense that Christopher Robin Milne became "Christopher Robin" in the stories, his stuffed animal, Edward Bear, became "Winnie-the-Pooh".
Question #66: What are the Words to Disney's "New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" Theme Song?

Milne cosmology
Why I keep talking about it
  • Introduction How necessary is general relativity? Infinity in a bubble Astronomers ... Milne's legacy
  • No, not the Hundred Acre Wood. I mention the Milne model pretty frequently on sci.physics.research when people get confused about cosmological theories. It's gotten to the point that its official name there is now "that Milne model that Matt McIrvin likes to talk about." I shall explain why. (Someday this should have more external links and suggestions for additional reading. For now I'll mention a major source of inspiration: Edward Harrison's classic textbook Cosmology: The Science of the Universe. The early and mid-20th century British astrophysicist Edward Arthur Milne considered his cosmological theory a serious threat to general relativity (which he tried to replace with something he called "kinematic relativity"). In hindsight, the Milne cosmology is no real challenger to modern general-relativistic cosmology, but it is an enlightening "toy model" of Big Bang ideas about the universe. Thinking about it seems to clarify many issues of what is meant by expanding space, the true role of gravity in cosmology, and the significance of the "cosmic time" coordinates of cosmological models. Historically it was the starting point for much work on the role of symmetry in cosmology, and it is illuminating in that regard as well.
