Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar—The island of Madagascar is one of the planet's foremost biodiversity hotspots, a tropical Eden threatened with large-scale destruction by unsustainable human activities. Fortunately, Dr. Pat Wright (State University of New York, Stony Brook) is there.
This remarkable woman was a housewife who bought a monkey for a pet and soon found herself fascinated by primates. That fascination led to a doctorate in primatology, a position at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and 15 years of work on behalf of Madagascar's forests, people, and animals.
She discovered a species of lemur previously unknown to science, spearheaded the creation of Ranomafana National Park, and helped thousands of villagers initiate sustainable community development practices. Wright's pioneering work has earned her a MacArthur "genius" award and led to her being knighted by the Malagasy government.

Measuring the Curvature of the Universe by Measuring the Curvature of the Hubble Diagram
Two groups are measuring distant supernovae with the goal of determining whether the Universe is open or closed by measuring the curvature in the Hubble diagram. The figure below shows both data sets: Wang et al. in orange and Tonry et al. in black. The Tonry et al. compendium includes the Wang et al. data. The curves show a closed Universe (Omega = 2) in red, the critical density Universe (Omega = 1) in black, the empty Universe (Omega = 0) in green, the steady state model in blue, and the WMAP based concordance model with Omega_M = 0.27 and Omega_V = 0.73 in purple. This model gives H o = 71 km/sec/Mpc which has been used to scale the luminosity distances in the plot. The data show an accelerating Universe at low to moderate redshifts but a decelerating Universe at higher redshifts, consistent with a model having both a cosmological constant and a significant amount of dark matter. Both groups have been the subject of news articles in Science, on 30 Jan 1998 and 27 Feb 1998. I have combined their two error ellipses along with another constraint from the location of the Doppler peak in the angular power spectrum of the CMB anisotropy. The two SNe groups give very similar error ellipses, and the combined CMB-SNe fit indicates that a flat Universe with a cosmological constant is preferred. But the systematic errors on the SNe data, shown as the large grey (or pink) ellipse, could allow for a vanishing cosmological constant lambda. The red, black, green and blue circles on the Figure to the right are keyed to the colors of the curves on the Figure shown above.

Alan Alexander Milne was born in London on January 18, 1882. He was the youngest of three brothers named, David Barret Milne and Kenneth John Milne. His father, John Vine, was a school teacher and his mother, Sarah Maria, was a homemaker. They married August 27, 1878. And to no surprise, Alan Alexander could read at the age of two. Alan Alexander first attended the Henley House, then at Westminster School, and then Cambridge on a mathematics scholarship. In 1903, Milne went to London to write. In 1906, he became the editor of Punch magazine. He continued on with this position for eight years. Within this time he wrote his first book; three collections of his contributions to the magazine were also published. In 1913 he married Dorothy deb Selincourt, known to friends as Daphne. In 1915, during World War I, he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and served in France. During his military service he wrote three plays, all of which were seen on the London stage.

ACQUISITION: The Robert MacDowell Collection was given to the University of New Hampshire by Professor Robert Manton in 1984. Requests for permission to publish material from this collection should be discussed with the Special Collections Librarian. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860-1908) was the first American composer to achieve international recognition. Born in New York City in 1860, MacDowell studied music as a child and travelled to France at the age of 15 to begin a nine year residence in Europe. He returned to the United States in June of 1884 to marry Marian Nevins. Praised for his compositions as well as for his piano playing ability, MacDowell was a popular figure throughout the late 1880s and early 1890s. In fact, he was described by some of his contemporaries as "the greatest musical genius America has produced. In 1896, Columbia University offered MacDowell a job as as Professor of Music and he taught there for eight years, resigning in 1904 due to philosophical disagreements with the faculty. By 1905, MacDowell suffered from what was diagnosed as "nervous exhaustion," an ailment that resulted in complete "cerebral collapse." He died in 1908 at the age of forty-six.

In Memory of Christopher Robin Milne
Christopher Robin Milne was the son of A.A. Milne. He was known to his family as "Billy Moon." The "Moon" part came from the way Christopher said the family name when he was little. "Billy" was the family's name for him, because they originally wanted to christen him William. This is a picture of A.A. Milne and Christopher (with a certain Mr. Edward Bear). Christopher Milne died recently. (1920 - 1996) This page is black in his memory. I wish him the best of times in heaven with Edward Bear.
This poem was written for him by Brian Biddle. I found it in the alt.fan.pooh newsgroup A Bear and His Boy
Brian Biddle It seems so long since holidays in Hundred Acre Wood
When you and I, and all our friends, would have adventures there.
And even if it rained or snowed, the times were always good,
Life was always magical, for a small boy and his bear.
But I never thought that all we had, could not forever be.
I'm just a bear of little brain and these things bother me. They tell me you have gone away and never will return.
