WINIFRED EDGERTON (1863 - September 6, 1951) , the first woman to earn a doctorate at Columbia University and an early supporter of Barnard College, was born in Ripon, Wisconsin and later moved with her family to New York City. In 1883, after graduating from Wellesley College, where she had demonstrated exceptional ability in mathematics and astronomy, she came home to New York to live with her parents. She did some work for the Harvard Observatory, making an independent calculation of the orbit of a comet from data that Harvard furnished and tried to find a way to pursue graduate education. Through Melvil Dewey (of the famed Dewey Decimal System), who had just moved from

Wellesley Archives Wellesley to serve as Columbia's librarian, she met Columbia President F. A. P. Barnard, who was then trying to open Columbia to women. Barnard urged Edgerton to apply to do graduate work and, when the Columbia Trustees rebuffed her, suggested that she visit the trustees individually to plead her case. Eventually she won the favor of all, including even the Reverend Morgan Dix, who in addition to serving as a trustee was the rector of Trinity Church. Dix vigorously opposed opening Columbia College to women, but he came to see that Winifred Edgerton was a special case. She was not applying to the College but rather to the graduate school., and her talent and seriousness of purpose were immediately apparent. She needed a telescope (only Columbia had one in those days), and the professor of astronomy needed an assistant. And since her family worshipped at Trinity Church, Dr. Dix was assured of her good character. Believing that no precedent would be set, the trustees voted to allow Miss Edgerton to pursue her studies.

Winifred graduated from Wellesley College with an exceptional ability in mathematics and astronomy. She then moved on to work at the Harvard Observatory. After working there at graduate school for two years, in 1886 she was the first woman to receive a Columbia Ph. D. She also received a standing ovation which went on for over two minutes, She had leaned towards becoming a professor, and then met her husband, John Hamilton Merrill, and chose marriage over professing. Eventually, they moved to Albany, after her husband would not let her have a job he would take. Even after this move, he still forbade her to do much work that he called unladylike. She had four children, and in 1906 founded Oaksmere School for Girls, which she ran for twenty years afterwards.

On her death in 1964 some of her friends decided that a fitting memorial both to her involvement with the literary world and her Anglo-American links would be a collection of "biographies and autobiographies of bookmen - writers of every category - who write in the English language and whose work (at least part of it) was published between 1900 and 1964". These books were chosen by Frank Swinnerton and Thomas B Costain and two identical sets were brought together - one to the ESU in London and one to New York. These books may be borrowed or consulted by ESU members, but as they are housed in the Small Drawing Room at Dartmouth House (often in use for meetings and functions) please check in advance that they will be accessible.
