IRON AND WINE + JAMES MERCER @ THE BORDERLINE, LONDON WEDNESDAY 12TH FEBRUARY
For the uneducated, James Mercer is lead singer and guitarist for American psychedelic indie pop outfit The Shins. Influenced in equal measures by The Beach Boys, The Beatles and Love, their melodic approach is rich with warm jangling guitars, echo-laden vocals and peculiar background atmospherics. Tonight Mercer is stripped bare with just an acoustic guitar and an undeniably catchy falsetto in his arsenal. He looks anxious and fatigued as he rushes through his set, but the sheer tunesmith quality manages to surpass the lack of showmanship. The songs - mostly taken from The Shins’ two-year-old debut ‘Oh, Inverted World’ - are warm and extremely compelling, live and acoustic, they seem even more burning and Mercer’s dulcet voice and tunesmithery shine. Bring on the follow-up to ‘Oh, Inverted World’. Quick. Iron And Wine is one man and his guitar. The man is Sam Beam, a born-and-bred southerner who possesses a delightful voice and an extraordinary knack for writing dark liquor-soaked music.

Our Mercer Connection
And How We are Related to President George Bush
(edited by Alice Davis Cates, 2 greats-granddaughter of Judge Davis.) Wayne has said on several occasions that we almost seem to be led to some things! We had already "found" our Veazey family ancestors in Maryland, including John Veazey's son, James Veazey, who married Mary Mercer in 1716 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Cecil County. Mary was listed on the church records as a "spinster," with no notation of her parents. A search of records in Cecil County showed a Thomas and Elizabeth Mercer as the only eligible parents for Mary at that time and in that place. Thomas may have had two wives Elizabeth, and if so, our Mary was probably the daughter of the first Elizabeth. On one of our many trips several years ago to visit our son, Mark, in Wisconsin, as we were traveling through Illinois, I saw a mention of " Clover Lawn ," the mansion of David Davis in Bloomington on the Illinois map. Now, Wayne has a nephew named David Davis, his brother Don's eldest. Just for fun, I told Wayne we needed to find this "mansion" and take a picture of it so that we could show Dave his house. So we did! It was after hours, so there was no one to talk to about this David Davis, ONLY the historical marker. (Alice tells me that she never heard her grandmother's house referred to as a "mansion," but the Illinois Department of Archives and History used that term in their tourism brochure.)

Contacts - Nikki Nickell gave us much help with the Boyd family of Millersburg.
Boyd is a fairly common name and we are lucky to find some biographical information in Wayne County, Indiana, to help us with some of the Mercer County Boyds. By 1790 there were 309 heads of families in America with some version of the surname Boyd. They were scattered across all thirteen colonies with the majority in Pennsylvania. There were five families in Virginia which seems to be the origin of some of the Mercer County Boyds. Our main family of interest which was that of Mahlon Boyd of New Boston in 1860 is a little more difficult.
Mahlon and Drusilla Harrell Boyd of New Boston
The Mahlon Boyd family is found in the 1860 census in New Boston: #1873 Malon Boyd, 32, printer, born Indiana; Drusilla, 25, Indiana; Milton, 2, Il; Ruth 3/12, Il. Because Mahlon was deceased prior to the 1880 census we do not have any information on the birthplace of his parents and so far have not discovered the names of his parents. Mahlon and Drusilla also had another child, Rebecca A. Boyd, died August 4, 1857, age 20 months, 23 days. She is buried in New Boston Cemetery not far from Drusilla's father. Mahlon Boyd married Drusilla Harrell, daughter of Edmund and Rebecca Alyea Harrell (see Harrell link above), supposedly on 7/12/1855 in Mercer County, Illinois, but we actually find the marriage record as 1/12/1855 in Franklin County, Indiana (Book 7, page 142). Since Drusilla was with the Harrell family in Mercer County in 1850 she must have returned to visit someone in Franklin County, Indiana and met Mahlon there. Perhaps the 7/12/1855 in Mercer County carried by Harrell researchers reflects a second ceremony in Mercer that relatives and friends there could attend. We did not find Mahlon in Franklin County in 1850.

A collateral branch was led by Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Daniel's older brother was John Carroll, the first Roman Catholic bishop in the United States. Daniel was born in 1730 at Upper Marlboro, MD. Befitting the son of a wealthy Roman Catholic family, he studied for 6 years (1742-48) under the Jesuits at St. Omer's in Flanders. Then, after a tour of Europe, he sailed home and soon married Eleanor Carroll, apparently a first cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton. Not much is known about the next two decades of his life except that he backed the War for Independence reluctantly and remained out of the public eye. No doubt he lived the life of a gentleman planter.

Hi, I would like to make a comment with as little effort as possible. Preferably with just this E-Mail. I feel basic services should be capped and not deregulated. The Cable company can sell all of their other services for as much as they want to attempt to charge but they should not be able to raise the basic rate. This is only bad news for consumers and nothing good can possible come from it. Thank you........................James Mercer. Calgary
