May 22, 1967, New York City), black poet and writer who became, through numerous translations, one of the foremost interpreters to the world of the black experience in the United States. Hughes's parents separated soon after his birth, and young Hughes was raised by his mother and grandmother. After his grandmother's death, he and his mother moved to half a dozen cities before reaching Cleveland, where they settled. His poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," written the summer after his graduation from high school in Cleveland, was published in Crisis (1921) and brought him considerable attention. After attending Columbia University (1921-22), he explored Harlem, forming a permanent attachment to what he called the "great dark city." He worked as a steward on a freighter bound for Africa. Back from seafaring and sojourning in Europe, he won an Opportunity magazine poetry prize in 1925. He received the Witter Bynner Undergraduate Poetry Award in 1926.

Willie Nelson appears briefly in The Big Bounce , so if you ever had an inclination to see him drink Wild Turkey and play dominoes with Harry Dean Stanton, the sad, ineffectual dad from Pretty in Pink who looks even more sad and more ineffectual 18 years later then enjoy. The only other reason to see this heist caper would be to vicariously enjoy the beautifully filmed Hawaiian islands; the actors look as if they were there mainly for the free trip off the mainland. As petty criminal Jack Ryan, Owen Wilson, with his surfer tan and perpetually chapped lips, eases through the movie on his insouciant charm like he just woke up from a long nap on the beach after a few too many mai-tais at lunch. Ryan is an unlucky drifter/con man who gets fired from his hotel construction job after being provoked into breaking his foreman's jaw with a baseball bat. He then slides into a maintenance job at the competing resort of the justice of the peace who ruled on his case. The story about Ryan, who falls for his former boss' mistress, who then seduces him into a heist that just might turn his luck around, never quite rises above the luscious flora and deep blue waves. At less than 90 minutes, the film is too short and director George Armitage just can't bring to it the energy level necessary to make sense of the plot twists and reversals of fortune from the Elmore Leonard novel, on which the film is based. The style decision behind Morgan Freeman's panama hat and single, white, dangly earring is more interesting than whatever scheme his character is crafting.
