Born Gerard de Cremere (or Kremer) in Rupelmonde . "Mercator" is the Latinized form of his name. It means "seller" or "marketer". Educated in 's-Hertogenbosch and at the University of Louvain . He travelled extensively, which provoked a keen interest in geography . He returned to Louvain and worked with Gemma Frisius and Gaspar Myrica. They worked together from to to construct a terrestrial globe . Later, Mercator produced a map of Palestine ), another map of the world ( ) and a map of Flanders ( Mercator was charged with heresy in and spent seven months in prison. In , he moved to Duisburg where he opened a cartographic workshop. He completed a six-panel map of Europe ( ) and he taught mathematics . He produced more maps and he was appointed Court Cosmographer to Duke Wilhelm of Cleve in . He devised a new projection and first used it in , it had parallel lines of longitude to aid navigation by sea, as compass courses could be marked as straight lines. He took the word

New Life for a 400-Year-Old Atlas by Gerardus MercatorAn Interview with the Publisher of the English-Language Edition Lost until recently, Gerardus Mercator's legendary 16th-century Europe atlas is now published in English. Below is an Interview with the Publisher of the English-Language Edition. by Shel Horowitz The Mercator Atlas of Europe is an amazing and unusual book. Its publisher describes it as, "The Mercator Atlas of Europe: 17 facsimile prints from a long- lost 16th-century atlas by Mercator and a richly illustrated large format book, enclosed in a linen portfolio and laminated slipcase." But that's only part of the story. This elegant volume not only includes a facsimile of an atlas by famed 16-th century cartographer Gerardus Mercator (inventor of the Mercator Projection, which allowed sailorsfor the first timeto plot a straight-line course on a map), but also contains several scholarly monographs, as well as numerous full-color ancient maps from Mercator, his sons, and many of his contemporaries. The maps representing the original atlas are presented as unbound, fold-out sheets, separated by country or region. Shel Horowitz, editor of Global Arts Review and Global Travel Review, talked with Liz Oakley of Walking Tree Press, the book's American publisher.

2. Father
Occupation: Artisan, Cleric
His father was a poor shoemaker. However, Mercator was reared by an uncle, who was an affluent ecclesiastic.
The uncle's financial status was the one that determined
Mercator's circumstances.
3. Nationality
Birth: Rupelmonde, Flanders
Career: Germany
Death: Duisberg, Germany
4. Education
Schooling: Louvain, M.A.
His uncle, Gisbert Mercator, sent him to school at 'sHertogenbosch at the House of the Bretheren of the Common Life, probably as preparation to enter the priesthood.
1530, entered University of Louvain, principal studies were philosophy and theology. I assume B.A.
1532, M.A., Louvain. After graduation he studied mathematics and astronomy privately under Gemma Frisius, and acquired engraving skills.
5. Religion
Affiliation: Catholic, Protestant
I find it impossible to tell from what follows; Cleves was Protestant, but he had innumerable Catholic patrons.
1544, accused of heresy and imprisoned several months be- fore being released for lack of evidence. This occurred in Catholic territory. Note that he moved to Cleves shortly.

87. The Mercator Projection

http://baby.indstate.edu/gga/gga_cart/gecart86.htm
THE MERCATOR CHART Gerardus Mercator
Developed for navigation, the strength of the Mercator Chart is its conformality. That is, at any intersection of longitude and latitude, it maintains all angular relationships thus correct azimuths. For a navigator, then, a straight line plotted from point A to point B on the chart would represent a rhumb line. A rhumb crosses all meridians at a constant azimuth allowing the navigator to set a compass orientation and proceed forthright. On The Mercator Chart a rhumb is always a straight line, whereas the corresponding great circle is a curved line (unlike the Gnomonic where the converse is true). Tissot's Indicatrix indicates numerically the property of conformality. Thus it is that The Mercator Chart is not a good map for global viewing (a better one for viewing might be Gall's ) but excellent for navigation. An article by Fred Roeder in the Professional Surveyor describes why and how Gerardus Mercator developed The Mercator Chart.

91. Mercator

http://users.belgacom.net/ambassadeurs/frans/mercator_fr.htm
