Karl Menger attended the Doblinger Gymnasium in Vienna (1913-1920) where one of his fellow students was Pauli . Karl entered the University of Vienna in 1920 to study physics. However Hahn became a lecturer in Vienna in 1921 and Menger attended a course he gave on What's new concerning the concept of a curve.
Menger became interested in the topic and was encouraged by Hahn to work on the topic. Menger's work led him to a definition of dimension independently of Urysohn , however Urysohn had died in a drowning accident before he could publish his work and Menger was not aware of it. After a severe lung disease which forced Menger to spend more than a year in a sanatorium, he returned with important papers he had written on dimension while in the sanatorium and completed his doctorate in 1924. In 1925 Menger was invited by Brouwer to take up a post in the University of Amsterdam where he spent two years working with Brouwer . In 1927 Menger was invited by Hahn to accept the chair of geometry at the University of Vienna when Reidemeister Brouwer and they were not on the best of terms. In 1938, as a result of the political situation in Austria, he resigned his chair and accepted a post in the USA at the University of Notre Dame. Karl Signund writes:-

The characteristic mathematical expressions appearing in those definitions are Cayley-Menger determinants

Menger was born in Neu Sandec, Galicia, a part of present day Poland that was at the time part of Austria. He was the son of a wealthy family of minor nobility, his father was a lawyer. After attending Gymnasium he studied law at the Universities of Prague and Vienna and later received a doctorate in jurisprudence from the University of Krakow. In the 1860's Menger left school and enjoyed a stint as a journalist reporting and analyzing market news, first at the Lemberger Zeitung and later at the Wiener Zeitung.

Menger, Karl (1902-1985)
When Hitler occupied Austria in March 1938, Menger, who at that time was teaching at Notre Dame, immediately resigned from his professorship in Vienna. He accepted a permanent position at the University of Notre Dame where he edited the Reports of a Mathemalical Colloquium, 2nd series (1937-46). From 1946 to his retirement in 1971 he was professor of mathematies at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. During these years and after he was offered and accepted visiting professorships at various European university institutes (among them the Sorbonne in Paris, and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna). From his youth, when he edited and introduced the second German edition (1923) of his father's Principles of Economics, to his late life (cf. his 1972/73 paper on Austrian marginalism) Menger had been deeply interested in economic theory. Karl Menger's Vienna Colloquium
The "Vienna Colloquium" run by the mathematician Karl Menger (son of the economist Carl Menger ) in the 1930s, brought together many different minds from mathematics but also the physical sciences, philosophy, statistics and economics, that eventually set in motion modern general equilibrium theory from its early roots in the Lausanne School. Among the relevant participants in the Colloquium besides Karl Menger , was the banker and amateur economist Karl Schlesinger as well as the young Oskar Morgenstern , the polymath John von Neumann and the statistician Abraham Wald . Other participants included assorted Viennese physicists and mathematicians like Kurt Gödel . The proceedings of the Colloquium were collected by Menger and published as the Ergebnisse eines mathematischen Kolloquiums during the 1930s. One could argue that the Vienna Colloquium was the product of three distinct intellectual strands: the logical positivist philosophy of the Vienna Circle , the mathematics of Hilbert's "formalist" programme and the economics of the Austrian School. In economics, the rallying point for the Vienna Colloquium was the investigation of metatheoretic general equilibrium systems with multiple, simultaneously interacting parts. For economists, the prototype of such a system was Gustav

The selection committee is appointed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Karl Menger (1902-1985) was a distinguished twentieth century mathematician who made major contributions to a number of areas of mathematics, including dimension theory, logic, lattice theory, differential geometry, and graph theory. Menger, who held academic positions in Europe and the United States, was widely published. The Karl Menger Award was established by a gift to Duke University from George and Eva Menger-Hammond, the daughter of Karl Menger.
