He chose red, yellow and blue as his basic colours, and vermillion, massicot and azurite as their representatives amongst the pigments. Black and white were considered to be the agents of light and darkness, which either lighten of darken the colours. Mayer's original showed a planar figure with 91 compartments, but at the close of his lecture had also mentioned that each of the constructed (mixed) colours could be modified towards bright or dark by adding up to four parts of white or black. The aggregate of theoretically distinguishable colours in his system therefore rises by 2 x 5 x 91, to 910. The position that each colour could adopt is shown in the figure, with its superimposed triangles, as described by Mayer but not graphically illustrated. The

Tobias Mayer Mayer began calculating lunar and solar tables in 1753 and in 1755 he sent them to the British government. These tables were good enough to determine longitude at sea with an accuracy of half a degree. Mayer's method of determining longitude by lunar distances and a formula for correcting errors in longitude due to atmospheric refraction were published in 1770 after his death. In a preface written to his tables written in 1760 Mayer says I am the more unwilling my tables should lie any longer concealed; especially as the most celebrated astronomers of almost every age have ardently wished for a perfect theory of the Moon ... on account of its singular use in navigation. I have constructed theses tables ... with respect to the inequalities of motions, from that famous theory of the great Newton , which that eminent mathematician Eulerus first elegantly reduced to general analytic equations.

NB: Si consiglia di osservare l'immagine n° 4 - Observing images of Hortensius domes obtained on UT 19,50-20,25

25 Mayer, Tobias Tobias Mayer's grössere Mondkarte nebst Detailzeichnungen . Göttingen: Univ.-buchdr. von E.A. Huth, 1881. In 1879, the Director of the Göttingen Observatory, W. Klinkerfues, suddenly decided to publish Tobias Mayer's large moon map and his lunar drawings, which had gathered dust in the observatory library for 130 years. Klinkerfues was motivated by the nearly simultaneous appearances of the Lohrmann and Schmidt maps in 1878. The Lohrmann map inspired him because of the enthusiastic reception it received; astronomers welcomed its publication because it would be a valuable tool in resolving the question of lunar surface change. If a sixty-year-old map could be useful, how much more valuable would a map be that was twice as old, by a selenographer just as competent as Lohrmann? However, the prospect of having a large map engraved was forbidding, and this is where the Schmidt map provided the inspiration, for it had been reproduced from Schmidt's ink original by photolithography. The same method could be easily applied to Mayer's manuscript map, and his drawings as well.
The drawings are a superb testament to Mayer's observing skill. The illustration shows a sketch of Mare Crisium (Sea of Crises) and four craters above on the terminator: Langrenus, Vendelinus, Petavius (with central peak) and Furnerius. Mayer's rendition of the four craters may compared with an early Lick Observatory photograph (
