This cemetery has regular care and is in good shape. It appears that many of the older burial monuments may have been replaced. The cemetery is just north of the town of Mayer, Minnesota on the East side of Carver county road 23. Just across the road, on the west side of Carver county road 23, is the Evangelical United Brethren Church Cemetery In the ‘Mayer Centennial 1886 - 1986’, under the section about Zion Lutheran Church, ‘ ... in 1894, a second graveyard was purchased. The first graveyard, which was located on the river road to Crow River Goose Farms, was on extremely low ground, and the bodies of the deceased were often lowered into a water filled grave. The 47 burial sites in the original cemetery were moved to the new site, the present Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Among those moved were the ten children who died in the Diptheria epidemic of 1884-1885.’ In ‘Compendium of History and Biography of Carver and Hennepin Counties, Minnesota’, written in 1919, it states: ‘Zion’s Evangelical Church was organized in 1868 and the same year the church was built on section 6 (probably Waconia township).’

Adolph Mayer's proof of the multiplier rule in the calculus of variations
The multiplier rule is involved in the formulation of the most general problem of the calculus of variations. Almost ninety years elapsed between the first formulation by Lagrange in 1797 of this rule and Adolph Mayer's proof in 1886. Mayer's derivation may be characterized as the first satisfactory proof of the rule. Since Mayer there have been several other demonstrations, by Hilbert, Turksma, Bliss and Radon. The proof adduced in several modern textbooks is due to Bliss. The paper contends that Mayer's original proof possesses exceptional explanatory power and merits renewed attention. The paper also examines the historical cirumstances associated with the long delay in the formulation and first satisfactory proof of the rule.

The outsiders who dreamt up America
Jewish immigrants turned movie moguls forever changed the way Americans see themselves, writes CHARLES CUMMING
IT'S a delicate subject. Mention the relationship between Hollywood and Jews and you can land in some very hot water. Journalist William Cash discovered this in 1991 when he wrote an article for The Spectator about the increasing influence of Jews on the American entertainment industry. More than a dozen movie luminaries - including Charlton Heston, Barbra Streisand and Steven Spielberg - sent an impassioned letter of complaint to the magazine, chastising Cash as a latter-day Nazi and complaining about the trite and vulgar Jewish stereotypes in which he had couched his argument. Yet the thrust of his piece was accurate. The movie industry in the US has always been controlled by Jewish men and women in a town that was created by Jewish immigrants, Hollywood. What is less well known is that the stories and themes of the movies distributed in its early years reflected the sense of exclusion and persecution that the studio moguls had experienced as younger men. That, at least, is the persuasive argument put forward in Hidden Hollywood, a documentary screened in Britain this month.
