1. The Telescope
The JCMT is situated at the summit of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii, at an altitude of 4092m above sea level. This is one of the best astronomical observing sites in the world, partly because the atmosphere above Hawaii is particularly stable and unpolluted. The JCMT is just one of a dozen or so observatories on the mountain. At submillimetre wavelengths, the transmittance of the terrestrial atmosphere is determined primarily by the amount of water vapour in the line of sight. A high-altitude observing site is therefore an absolute requirement. Unfortunately, even though the summit is normally well above most of the weather, the water vapour content of the atmosphere above the telescope can be quite variable.

James Clerk Maxwell
James Clerk Maxwell is generally regarded as the greatest theoretical physicist of the 19th century. Born in Edinburgh to a well-known Scottish family, he entered the University of Edinburgh at age 15, around the time that he discovered an original method for drawing a perfect oval. Maxwell was appointed to his first professorship in 1856 at Aberdeen. This was the beginning of a career during which he would develop the electromagnetic theory of light and explanations of the nature of Saturn's rings and contribute to the kinetic theory of gases. James Clerk Maxwell James Clerk Maxwell was one of the greatest scientists of the 19th century. He is best known for the formulation of the theory of electromagnetism and in making the connection between light and electromagnetic waves. He also made significant contributions in the areas of physics, mathematics, astronomy and engineering. He considered by many as the father of modern physics. Maxwell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1831. Even though most of his formal higher education took place in London, he was always drawn back to his family home in the hills of Scotland. As a young child, Maxwell was fascinated with geometry and mechanical models. When he was only 14 years old, he published his first scientific paper on the mathematics of oval curves and ellipses that he traced with pins and thread. Maxwell continued to publish papers on a variety of subjects. These included the mathematics of human perception of colors, the kinetic theory of gasses, the dynamics of a spinning top, theories of soap bubbles, and many others.

Maxwell, James Clerk Scottish physicist who lived from 1831 to 1879. In 1871 he became the first professor of experimental physics at Cambridge, where he organized the Cavendish Laboratory. Maxwell's notable work in Electricity and Magnetism was summarized in his A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (1873). He developed the theory of the Electromagnetic Field(s) on a mathematical basis and concluded that electric and magnetic Energy travel in transverse Wave s that propagate at a speed equal to that of Light ; light is thus only one type of Electromagnetic Radiation. Maxwell's theoretical study (1859) of Saturn's rings foreshadowed his later investigations of Heat and the kinetic theory of Gas es (see States Of Matter

In Scotland, the right to bear arms is rigorously regulated: The arms at left are the ancient arms of Lord Maxwell, Chief of the Clan Maxwell . The more recent chiefs, including the Earls of Nithsdale, bore more complex arms (the clan has been without a recognised chief ever since William Maxwell of Carruchan died in 1863). The physicist James Clerk Maxwell would not have been allowed to bear the Maxwell shield without some mark of difference, although he was entitled to use the Clan's Strap and Buckle Badge with the Chief's crest ( A stag couchant before a holly bush Proper ) and motto ( Reviresco ), and could wear the Maxwell tartan . The arms at right are most probably the unregistered arms which the Maxwells of Middlebie bore before 1672 (when registration with the Lyon Office became compulsory). The branch was revived by

There's alot of interesting stuff here. Very informative about history yes, but it is still probably the best text on eletromagnetic theory. There is some advanced math in here. I only read part of it for a research project(its huge). From this(and the equation contained within) came the basis for all of modern physics. Maxwell's equations are inconsistent in some ways with classical mechanics. To compensate, physicists had to create relatvity and quantum mechanics. Maxwell's work was not all...

This is how founding fathers thought and wrote about the Matter and Motion. It is a nostalgic reading. Maxwell himself wrote about Matter and Motion of course based on Newtonian Physics. You do not learn any new Physics unless you are doing study in the History of Science. Maxwell basically starts with definition of concepts in Newtonian Mechanics and explains Newton's laws of Motion. Force, Energy, Momentum all the good staff. Short book and interesting piece of history. Definitely worth rea...

Guided tours: The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) A Microwave Telescope Naturally emitted microwaves are the target of this unusual telescope. Located near the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the JCMT is helping to open a new window on the universe. Named after the pioneering Scottish physicist who gave us a fundamental understanding of electricity and magnetism, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope is used to investigate a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is only now beginning to be explored. The telescope is capable of exploring radio waves with a range of about 0.3 to 2 mm. Science and the JCMT What sort of organic molecules exist beyond our solar system? How are stars made in the murky depths of interstellar clouds? Astronomers have used the telescope to gather unique information about many types of objects, including the Sun, comets, planets, molecular clouds, galaxies, quasars and the cosmic background radiation. Analysis might include determining what the microwave emitting gases are made of, how they are moving, what sort of magnetic field is present or how much radiation is given off, helping to answer questions that would be otherwise impossible to answer.

JCMT Main Page JCMT Lab Tour JCMT Telescope Tour Contents The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) The JCMT is located on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, but not for the reasons the optical telescopes are placed there. Optical telescopes are located there chiefly due to smooth airflow above the mountaintop, which produces sharp star images. Instead, the JCMT is located on the mountain for reasons more in common with those telescopes that have Infrared capabilities. Water vapour prevents microwaves from reaching the telescope, so the designers decided to put the telescope high up in the earth's atmosphere on an arid mountain top. Mauna Kea was one of the best choices. Since water vapour is the only concern, the JCMT can, like other non-optical telescopes, operate in the daytime. Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity James Clerk Maxwell ( ), one of the finest scientific minds in history, was mocked at school for his perceived stupidity. Though he had shown scientfic curiosity from a very young age, Maxwell's intelligence was not immediately obvious to his more literary-minded peers at the Edinburgh Academy, partly because of his interest in science, which they did not understand, and partly because of his reluctance to socialise with them. Whatever the reasons, he only slowly emerged from this isolation when his school marks began to show his exceptional talents. He went on to study at the universities in Edinburgh and Cambridge. ) 'radiometer', which had been taken as evidence that light could exert pressure, which would have confirmed the particle theory of radiation. Maxwell proved that the motion could be attributed to the effects of the rarified gas that remained within the near-vacuum that the radiometer resided in. Finally, Maxwell conducted a series of experiments on colour, in which he found out that any colour could be created by adding or subtracting any other three colours, and made a number of experiments to determine to what extent experience of colour is subjective. Maxwell held the chair of natural philosophy at Marischal College, Aberdeen from

James Clerk Maxwell
Maxwell was a physicist who lived in the last century. He was particularly interested in how electricity and magnetism worked. One of his major accomplishments was providing the mathematical equations that describe how these two separate natural phenomena work together to make light and radio waves. The equations he discovered allowed other scientists to understand several facts about light:
  • light is made of electric and magnetic fields that change very, very rapidly as the electric field in a light wave changes, it changes the magnetic field; as the magnetic field changes, it changes the electric field; both fields work together to make up the light wave if we know the electric and magnetic properties of space, we can calculate the speed of light

James Clerk Maxwell
James Clerk Maxwell June 13 November 5 ) was a Scottish physicist , born in Edinburgh . He was the last representative of a younger branch of the well-known Scottish family of Clerk of Penicuik. Maxwell is generally regarded as the nineteenth century scientist who had the greatest influence on twentieth century physics, making contributions to the fundamental models of nature. In , on the centennial anniversary of Maxwell's birth, Einstein described Maxwell's work as the " most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton. Algebraic mathematics with elements of geometry are a feature of much of Maxwell's work. Maxwell demonstrated that electric and magnetic force s are two complementary aspects of electromagnetism . He showed that electric and magnetic field s travel through space , in the form of waves, at a constant velocity m/s. He also proposed that light was a form of electromagnetic radiation The scientific compound derived CGS unit measuring magnetic flux (commonly abbreviated as f ), the
