James Clerk Maxwell was born at 14 India Street in Edinburgh, a house built by his parents in the 1820s, but shortly afterwards his family moved to their home at Glenlair in Kirkcudbrightshire about 20 km from Dumfries. There he enjoyed a country upbringing and his natural curiosity displayed itself at an early age. In a letter written on 25 April 1834 when 'The Boy' was not yet three years old he is described as follows, see [4]:- He is a very happy man, and has improved much since the weather got moderate; he has great work with doors, locks, keys etc., and 'Show me how it doos' is never out of his mouth. He also investigates the hidden course of streams and bell-wires, the way the water gets from the pond through the wall and a pend or small bridge and down a drain ... When James was eight years old his mother died. His parents plan that they would educate him at home until he was 13 years old, and that he would then be able to go the Edinburgh University, fell through. A 16 year old boy was hired to act as tutor but the arrangement was not a successful one and it was decided that James should attend the Edinburgh Academy.

On a grey November day we [JOC and EFR] made the 50 mile train journey from St Andrews to Edinburgh to visit James Clerk Maxwell's house. The house where James Clerk Maxwell was born is at 14 India Street, Edinburgh about a fifteen minute walk from the railway station which is in the centre of Edinburgh. The house is now owned by the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation who have restored it almost to its original state by removing partitions which had been erected by previous owners. The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences shares the building and organises mathematical meetings there. The Director of Development of the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation, Professor David S Ritchie, showed us the house and the historical documents and other items owned by the Foundation. You can see a map of the area at the time Maxwell was there and a picture of the house as it is now and the sign outside marking it as Maxwell's birthplace.

Maxwell's equations provided the basis for the unification of electric field and magnetic field , the electromagnetic description of light , and ultimately, Theodor Kaluza 's unification ( Kaluza-Klein theory ) of electromagnetism with Albert Einstein 's theory of relativity The modern mathematical formulation of Maxwell's equations is due to Oliver Heaviside and Willard Gibbs , who in reformulated Maxwell's original equations using vector calculus . (Maxwell's 1865 formulation was in terms of 20 equations in 20 variables, although in 1873 he attempted a quaternion formulation that he ultimately found awkward.) The change to the vector notation produced a symmetric mathematical representation that reinforced the perception of physical symmetries between the various fields.

James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), the Scottish physicist, did revolutionary work in electromagnetism and the kinetic theory of gases. He formulated, independently of Ludwig Boltzmann, the Maxwell-Boltzmann kinetic theory of gases. Maxwell showed that a few relatively simple mathematical equations could express the behavior of electric and magnetic fields and their interrelated nature. These four partial differential equations first appeared in fully developed form in Electricity and Magnetism (1873). Since known as Maxwell's equations they are one of the great achievements of 19th-century physics.

The JCMT is used to study our Solar System, interstellar dust and gas, and distant galaxies. It is situated close to the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, at an altitude of 4092m. The JCMT is operated by the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hilo, Hawaii on behalf of the parent organizations Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council in the United Kingdom, the National Research Council of Canada and The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research Telescope Operations Update ACSIS/HARP and, in particular, SCUBA2 will require extensive structural modifications of the facility. WHO WAS JAMES CLERK MAXWELL? James Clerk Maxwell was one of the greatest scientists who have ever lived. To him we owe the most significant discovery of our age - the theory of electromagnetism. He is rightly acclaimed as the father of modern physics. He also made fundamental contributions to mathematics, astronomy and engineering. So much of our technology in the world today stems from his grasp of basic principles of the universe. Wide ranging developments in the field of electricity and electronics, including radio, television, radar and communications, derive from Maxwell's discovery - which was not a synthesis of what was known before, but rather a fundamental change in concept that departed from Newton's view and was to influence greatly the modern scientific and industrial revolution. James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh at 14 India Street, a house built for his father in that part of Edinburgh's elegant Georgian New Town which was built after the Napoleonic Wars. Although the family moved to their estate at Glenlair, near Dumfries, shortly afterwards, James returned to Edinburgh to attend school at The Edinburgh Academy. He continued his education at the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge. In 1856, at the early age of 25, he became Professor of Physics at Marischal College, Aberdeen. From there he moved first to King's College, London, and then, in 1871, to the distinguished Chair of Experimental Physics at Cambridge where he directed the Cavendish Laboratory. It was at the Cavendish, over the next fifty years, that so much of the physics of today continued to develop from Maxwell's inspiration.

JAMES CLERK MAXWELL FOUNDATION
The James Clerk Maxwell Foundation was formed in Scotland in 1977 to honour Clerk Maxwell, one of the greatest scientists who has ever lived. In 1993 the Foundation acquired Clerk Maxwell's birthplace in Edinburgh. This elegant Georgian house after period restoration is now in active use as an internal centre for mathematical sciences. On display is a growing collection of heritage material associated with Clerk Maxwell, his associates and family circle. The Foundation's objectives are:- 1. To provide in the birthplace an attractive and stimulating environment for the mathematicians, scientists and engineers
from all over the world to meet in seminars, symposia, workshops and courses. 2. To advance the applications of mathematical sciences in science, industry and commerce through support in the
birthplace for the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS). ICMS was formed in 1990 by

The Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell , (b. Nov. 13, 1831, d. Nov. 5, 1879), did revolutionary work in electromagnetism and the kinetic theory of gases. After graduating (1854) with a degree in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge, he held professorships at Marischal College in Aberdeen (1856) and at King's College in London (1860) and became the first Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge in 1871. Maxwell's first major contribution to science was a study of the planet Saturn's rings, the nature of which was much debated. Maxwell showed that stability could be achieved only if the rings consisted of numerous small solid particles, an explanation still accepted. Maxwell next considered molecules of gases in rapid motion. By treating them statistically he was able to formulate (1866), independently of Ludwig Boltzmann , the Maxwell-Boltzmann kinetic theory of gases.

James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), Scottish physicist, widely considered by twentieth and twenty-first century physicists to have been one of the most significant figures of the nineteenth century. His work fundamentally changed conceptions of electromagnetism and introduced the basis of field theory. He is also known for his work on thermodynamics and the kinetic theory of gases.
Education
At age 16, Maxwell left the Academy for Edinburgh University. His studies there included Natural Philosophy under Kelland, Forbes and Gregory; Moral Philosophy under Wilson; and Mental Philosophy under Sir William Hamilton. Maxwell consumed these subjects eagerly, and his letters and notes from this period (November 1847 to October 1850) clearly demonstrate an extraordinary thirst for knowledge. At the same time, we can see the maturation of his own critical faculties, together with the want for original research, and his vacations were invariably spent engaged in experiment of some kind at the family home of Glenlair. The 1997 Digital Preservation of "The Life of James Clerk Maxwell" We know James Clerk Maxwell primarily for Maxwell’s equations. While I personally have been working only several decades with Maxwell’s equations, there are many researchers who have been working with his equations for their entire professional careers. But what do we know about Maxwell the person? Where are all the biographies of this person described by Richard Feynman as the greatest physicist of the 19th century, the one person who, after the Civil War of the same century is long forgotten, will still be shining brightly? There are very few biographies of Maxwell. The most comprehensive biography was written by a life-long friend, Lewis Campbell with help from William Garnett. It is considered a primary historical reference on Maxwell. Published in 1882, shortly after Maxwell’s death, it is today found only in the rare book rooms of large libraries. However, now the entire text of the book with figures included is available here. In December of 1996, I gained access to a copy. As I started reading it, I was moved to engage in a major project: to digitize the book and to convert the images into word processor files (by means of OCR, Optical Character Recognition, software) so that others might enjoy the book as well.
