I Claim to Fame
John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert were the two principle inventors of the ENIAC computer, the first large-scale general-purpose electronic computer. ENIAC is an acronym for "Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer," built at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering. As a general-purpose computer to solve a wide range of calculations, this distinguished the ENIAC from earlier automated calculating machines designed for single problem-solving applications. They began the ENIAC in 1943 and completed the ENIAC in 1946.
The ENIAC was introduced to the public on Valentine's day,14 February 1946.
The ENIAC 's technical specifications :
  • took up 3,000 cubic feet weighted 30 tons used 18,000 vacuum tubes and 70,000 registers required more than 170 kilowatts of power had a random access memory capacity of about 1,000 information bits used punched cards to store data
The ENIAC was used by the U.S. Army for military calculations in the World War II.

Biography At the university of Pennsylvenia Eckert and the late John. W. Mauchly created ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). A 30 ton leviathan that contained less computational power than a single one of today's tiny silicon chips. Designed to figure trajectories for world war II atillery, ENIAC was 1000 times as fast as contemporary calculators , and became an invaluable tool for scientist working to build the first atom bomb. After selling their business in 1950 to Sperry Rand Corp, now Unisys, the partners continued to advance in their field. Eckert was awarded a National Science Medal in 1968.

Ein US-amerikanischer Physiker und Ingenieur (1907-1980) Zum Gedenken an seinen 25. Todestag Vor 25 Jahren starb am 8. Januar 1980 in Ambler (Pennsylvania) der US-amerikanische Physiker und Ingenieur John William Mauchly. Er wurde am 30. August 1907 in Cincinnati (Ohio/USA) geboren.

John Vincent Atanasoff - Forgotten Father of Computers
by Kilen Matthews
Beginnings and Education
John Vincent Atanasoff, born on 4 October 1903 in Hamilton, New York the first child of John Atanasoff and Iva Lucena Purdy took an early interest in mathematics. His father brought home a Dietzgen slide rule and young John's interest was captivated. He read the manual of how to use the slide rule and became fascinated with the underlying mathematical principles. With his mother's help, he began self-study of a college algebra book from his father's library. The family moved to Florida where John attended high school and graduated in only two years, receiving straight A's is all of his science and math courses. He did some work to accumulate funds and delayed his entry to university for short while. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida in 1925 with a perfect record of straight A's as an undergraduate. Atanasoff received his master's degree in mathematics from Iowa State College in 1926 and a few days after graduation married Lura Meeks. He moved to theoretical physics for his Ph.D. that he received from the University of Wisconsin. During his Ph.D. work, the Atanasoff's first daughter was born then John returned to Iowa State College as an assistant professor in mathematics and physics.

Aiken, Howard (Hathaway) b1939 ~
Eckert , J. (John) Presper 1919 ~ 1995
Computer engineer, inventor; born in Philadelphia. A University of Pennsylvania graduate in electronic engineering, he and John W. Mauchly developed the first practical electronic digital computer, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator (ENIAC) (194246); it weighed several tons and used thousands of valves and resistors. In 1951 an improved version of their computer, the UNIVAC I, became one of the first commercially sold computers. Eckert had more than 85 patents for his various electronic inventions. Gray , Elisha 1835 ~ 1901
Inventor, manufacturer; born in Barnesville, Ohio. He worked as a blacksmith, a boat-builder,and a carpenter before starting a small concern to make telegraphic equipment of his own invention. His little business eventually became the Western Electric Co., and Gray's some 70 patents included one for a multiplex telegraph. He claimed to have invented the telephone in the 1870s, but lost the patent rights to Alexander Graham Bell in a case eventually decided in the U.S. Supreme Court. Jacquard , Joseph Marie 1752 ~ 1834
Silk-weaver, born in Lyon, France. His invention (18018) of the Jacquard loom, controlled by punched cards, enabled an ordinary workman to produce the most beautiful patterns in a style previously accomplished only with patience, skill, and hard work. But though Napoleon rewarded him with a small pension and the Légion d'Honneur, the silk weavers were long opposed to his machine. At his death his machine was in almost universal use, and his punched card system was adopted in the 20th-century as a control and data input system for many office machines and early digital computers.

The First Stored Program Computer EDVAC
As was previously discussed, If we ignore both Atanasoff's machine and COLOSSUS , then the first true general- purpose electronic computer was the ENIAC , which was constructed at the University of Pennsylvania between 1943 and 1946. However, ENIAC's underlying architecture was very different to that of modern computers. During the course of designing ENIAC, it's creators, John William Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert Jr. , conceived the concept of stored program computing. This concept was subsequently documented by Johann (John) von Neumann in his paper which is now known as the First Draft (The computer structure resulting from the criteria presented in the " First Draft " is popularly known as a von Neumann Machine, and virtually all digital computers from that time forward have been based on this architecture.) a In August 1944, Mauchly and Eckert proposed the building of a new machine called the electronic discrete variable automatic computer (EDVAC) . Unfortunately, although the conceptual design for EDVAC was completed by 1946, several key members left the project to pursue their own careers, and the machine did not become fully operational until 1952. When it was finally completed, EDVAC contained approximately 4,000 vacuum tubes and 10,000 crystal diodes. A 1956 report shows that EDVAC's average error-free up-time was approximately 8 hours.

John Vincent Atanasoff, true inventor of the digital electronic computer, was born on October the 4th 1903 near Hamilton, New York. The Atanasov family name had been changed into Atanasoff by immigration officers on Ellis Island when Bulgarian Ivan Atanasov came to America in 1889 at the age of thirteen. He was accompanied by an uncle. His own father had been murdered by soldiers of the Ottoman Empire during the April Uprising of the Bulgarians against the Turks in 1876, the same year Ivan had been born. The year John Vincent was born the family moved to Osteen, Florida, and from there to Brewster, Florida. It was there that he attended grade school, and learned the basics of electricity from his father, an electric engineer. Somewhere around 1913 Ivan, who had changed his first name into John, bought a Dietzgen slide rule . Son John Vincent was immediately interested and very quickly learned everything about the mathematical background of the apparatus. His mother, Iva Lucena Atanasoff-Purdy , who was a mathematics school teacher, then helped him to understand the book, A College Algebra , by J.M.Taylor. It was then that he learned about
