Emile Mathieu is remembered especially for his discovery (in 1860 and 1873) of five sporadic simple groups named after him. These were studied in his thesis on transitive functions. Progress as remarkable as that achieved by Mathieu would seem to put him in the ideal position to obtain a university appointment but this was not forthcoming. He took on work as a private tutor of mathematics and he continued in this role for ten years. He did suffer a rather serious illness in 1866 and this seems to have stopped him taking over Mathieu's main work, after his initial interest in pure mathematics, was in mathematical physics although he did do some important work on the hypergeometric function . As Grattan-Guinness writes in [1]:- partial differential equations for a wide range of physical problems. Perhaps had Mathieu continued to follow up his remarkable discoveries in group theory , he might have achieved more fame and better posts in his lifetime.

Subject: WANTED: Photograph of Emile Mathieu Author: mtrott@wolfram.com Organization: The University of British Columbia Date: 23 Sep 1998 20:32:10 GMT A series of four large posters about higher mathematical functions, starting with the trigonometric functions and following with Bessel functions, orthogonal polynomials, and Jacobi functions up to MeijerG, is currently in the final stage of preparation at Wolfram Research Incorporated. The four posters are titled 1.) Elliptic Functions 2.) Elementary Functions 3.) Hypergeometric Functions 4.) Zeta and Mathieu Functions Every function (BesselJ, Zeta, MathieuC, ...) contains a box showing its defining properties, such as its series representation, product representation, differential equation, functional relation, continued fraction representation, ... , and a plot. A preview of the poster, including some of the functions, and an order form are available at: http://www.specialfunctions.com

“Comparative sociology is not a special branch of sociology; it is sociology itself in so far as it ceases to be purely descriptive and aspires to account for facts.” —Emile Durkheim. "It is quite evident that anyone who is forced to rely on translations, and furthermore on the use and evaluation of monumental, documentary, or literary sources, has to rely himself on a specialist literature which is often highly controversial, and the merits of which he is unable to judge accurately. Such a writer must make modest claims for the value of his work." —Max Weber.
