Home George Mason High School The Most Challenging and Demanding Public High School in the Washington Area
and
# 6 in the USA (according to Newsweek

For each of the past five years George Mason High School has been listed as "the most challenging" public school in the area by Jay Mathews of the Washington Post. Mr. Mathews then expanded his index nationwide and reported his results in the March 13, 2000 issue of Newsweek . He discovered that "challenging kids by encouraging them to take tough high-school courses produces students who can succeed later in college". According to his criteria, George Mason High School was ranked #2 in the nation. In the June 2, 2003 issue of Newsweek Mr. Mathews reported that "the surge in the number of students taking AP tests is changing life inside America's classrooms". He has posted a "new set of winners for 2003". The "challenge index" for George Mason High School has increased from 3.743 to 4.365 in the past 3 years which now ranks us 6th in the country. In 1998 Jay Mathews first attempted to determine "which area public high schools challenge their students most" and reported his findings in the Washington Post Magazine.

    http://www.masterstrack.com/news2000/USATFgeorge.html
    Posted November 1, 2000 George Mathews I am running because I haven’t seen a more qualified person step up to the position. I believe I am best qualified for the following reasons: I understand the business of the chair through my participation in most of the national conventions in the '90s. This is where most of the business of our organization is conducted. I think you need to have experienced this in order to run it. I have worked closely with the current chairman and fully understand the requirements of the position. I would advocate conducting more meetings with the Masters officers through conference calls and Internet exchange. Also, I would work with the other officers more as a TEAM , give more responsibility to the Vice Chair and consult more with the secretary, treasurer and other officers. Delegate other tasks to people who have the time, skill and desire. I would like to have a team-building day with the whole Masters Committee prior to each National Convention. As an athlete who has competed at all levels (local, regional, national and international), I understand what USATF Masters

    The truth about WMD in Iraq
    26 January 2004
    New Carnegie report clarifies Iraq WMD story
    WMD in Iraq: Evidence and Implications
    In a new report, WMD in Iraq: Evidence and Implications , Carnegie authors Jessica Mathews, George Perkovich, and Joseph Cirincione outline policy reforms to improve threat assessments, deter transfer of WMD to terrorists, strengthen the UN weapons inspection process, and avoid politicisation of the intelligence process. The policy recommendations flow from a detailed study that distills a massive amount of data into side-by-side comparisons of pre-war intelligence on Iraq; weapons of mass destruction, the official US presentation of that intelligence, and what is now known about Iraq's programs. The authors conclude that Iraq was not an imminent threat, that UN inspections were working far better than realized, that our intelligence process failed, that officials misrepresented the threat, and, importantly, that war was not the best-or only-option. Key policy recommendations include:
    • Create a nonpartisan independent commission to establish a clear picture of what the intelligence community knew and believed it knew about Iraq's weapon's program;
