Francis Maseres graduated from Clare College Cambridge in 1752 with a degree in classics and mathematics. He practiced law for a few years without much success, then served as Attorny General for Quebec until 1769. After returning to England he was appointed Cursitor Baron of the Exchequer and held this office until his death at the age of 93. Maseres wrote many mathematical works which show a complete lack of creative ability. He rejected negative numbers and that part of algebra which is not arithmetic, despite writing 150 years after and Harriot . It is probable that Maseres rejected all mathematics which he could not understand. He writes:- If any single quantity is marked either with the sign + or the sign - without affecting some other quantity, the mark will have no meaning or significance, thus if it be said that the square of -5, or the product of -5 into -5, is equal to +25, such an assertion must either signify no more than 5 times 5 is equal to 25 without any regard for the signs, or it must be mere nonsense or unintelligible jargon. Maseres had an unfortunate influence on the teaching of algebra in Britain for several decades. An example of this is seen in the algebra text of Nicolas Vilant, Regius Professor at St Andrews from 1765 to 1807.

Rare Math Books at the University of Michigan
The University of Michigan Library started with 3707 volumes (purchased for $5000), including Audubon's "The Birds of America" (1827-38). It offered little mathematics and grew slowly. A major improvement came in 1881 when a complete run of Crelle's Journal was donated. Two faculty made important contributions to the mathematics collection. Alexander Ziwet, who was on the faculty from 1898 to 1925, worked to improve the library and contributed a large collection of his own books. Louis C. Karpinski, on the faculty from 1904 to 1948, gathered many rare volumes for the mathematics collection. Another important influence occurred in 1964 when Mathematical Reviews moved to Ann Arbor. Today the mathematics collection at the University of Michigan is one of the best in the world. The collection of rare mathematics books is outstanding. The titles listed below in chronological order were selected by V. Frederick Rickey, of Bowling Green State University, to show to a history of mathematics course taught at Michigan State University by Dan Chazan on March 11, 1996. We would like to thank Peggy Daub, Head of Special Collections and curator of the mathematics collection at the library for her assistance. Euclid 1482 Elementa geometrie Published in Venice by Erhard Ratdolt. Uncatalogued.

Introduction to Criminal Libel and the Duty of Juries by Jon Roland I was delighted to discover on a library shelf a facsimile reprint of the three essays, two by Joseph Towers, from 1764 and 1784, and one by Francis Maseres, from 1792, on the duty of juries in criminal libel trials, but this small collection lacked a proper title, any indication of an editor, or an introduction, so I felt the need to provide these when I rendered the collection for publication online. For the most part these essays speak for themselves, and present what might be termed the Camdenian doctrine of jury process, named for Lord Camden, as opposed to the Mansfieldian doctrine, named for Lord Mansfield. At the time of the American Founding, the prevailing doctrine in the United States was Camdenian, and that is the doctrine of interpretation that must therefore be considered authoritative in interpreting the Constitution of 1787 and the Bill of Rights of 1792 with regard to juries and due process. In the United States today we do not have laws making "libel" a crime, and higher standards for proving libel when the plaintiff is a public official or other public person, but the history of the United States does not lack for other ways of attempting to do the same thing. Beginning with the Sedition Acts of 1798, through those of 1917, to those which are still on the books today, to charges of "conspiracy", "terrorism", or simply "contempt of court" for failing to disclose sources of journalistic investigators, in the Age of the Internet when arguably everybody is a journalist, raise the same general kinds of issues discussed in these essays by Towers and Maseres. The names change but the issues endure.
