Professor Andrey Andreevich Markov (1903-1979) founded the Russian school of constructive mathematics and logic. He graduated from Leningrad University in 1924, working at Leningrad University from 1933 to 1955, being a Professor since 1936. He was a member of the Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences from 1939 until 1972. In 1953 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences. He was Head of the Department of Mathematical Logic, Moscow University from 1959 to 1979. The major areas of Markov's mathematical achievements are topology, topological algebra, dynamical systems, the theory of algorithms and constructive mathematics. He proved the undecidability of the homeomorphism problem in topology and introduced the notion of a normal algorithm. In commemoration of his centennial, the New York Logic Colloquium and the Mid-Atlantic Mathematical Logic Seminar have sponsored a conference, entitled

    Models and Physical Reality
Probability Theory is a mathematical model of uncertainty. In these lectures, we introduce examples of uncertainty and we explain how the theory models them. It is important to appreciate the difference between uncertainty in the physical world and the models of Probability Theory. That difference is similar to that between laws of theoretical physics and the real world: even though mathematicians view the theory as standing on its own, when engineers use it, they see it as a model of the physical world. Consider flipping a fair coin repeatedly. Designate by and 1 the two possible outcomes of a coin flip (say for head and 1 for tail). This experiment takes place in the physical world. The outcomes are uncertain. This week, we try to appreciate the probability model of this experiment and to relate it to the physical reality.

    Markov Chains
In a previous page, we studied the movement between the city and suburbs. Indeed, if I are S are the initial population of the inner city and the suburban area, and if we assume that every year 40% of the inner city population moves to the suburbs, while 30% of the suburb population moves to the inner part of the city, then after one year the populations are given by
    The matrix
is very special. Indeed, the entries of each column vectors are positive and their sum is 1. Such vectors are called probability vectors. A matrix for which all the column vectors are probability vectors is called transition or stochastic matrix. Andrei Markov, a russian mathematician, was the first one to study these matrices. At the beginning of this century he developed the fundamentals of the Markov Chain theory.
A Markov chain is a process that consists of a finite number of states and some known probabilities p ij , where p ij is the probability of moving from state j to state i . In the example above, we have two states: living in the city and living in the suburbs. The number p ij represents the probability of moving from state i to state j in one year. We may have more than two states. For example, political affiliation: Democrat, Republican, and Independent. For example

    Andrei Andreyevich Markov
Born: 14 June 1856 in Ryazan, Russia
Died: 20 July 1922 in Petrograd (now St Petersburg), Russia
Markov is best known for his work in probability and for stochastic processes especially Markov chains. Markov was a graduate of Saint Petersburg University (1878), where he began a professor in 1886. Markov's early work was mainly in number theory and analysis, continued fractions, limits of integrals, approximation theory and the convergence of series. After 1900 Markov applied the method of continued fractions, pioneered by his teacher Pafnuty Chebyshev, to probability theory. He also studied sequences of mutually dependent variables, hoping to establish the limiting laws of probability in their most general form. He proved the central limit theorem under fairly general assumptions. Markov is particularly remembered for his study of Markov chains, sequences of random variables in which the future variable is determined by the present variable but is independent of the way in which the present state arose from its predecessors. This work launched the theory of stochastic processes. In 1923 Norbert Wiener became the first to treat rigorously a continuous Markov process. The foundation of a general theory was provided during the 1930s by Andrei Kolmogorov.

General Manager Bob Gainey did not disclose the salary figures of the contract. Last season Markov had a career year with the Canadiens. In the 2002-2003 season he managed to score 13 goals and 24 assists for a total of 37 points. His most impressive stat was his plus/minus, which was plus 13 on a defensively challenged hockey club. In his short career Markov has played in 198 games. His career stats are 24 goals and 60 assists for 84 points in those 198 games. http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=51849 Options Printer Friendly Page Send to a Friend Login/Create an Account Search Discussion Threshold No Comments Nested Flat Thread Oldest First Newest First Highest Scores First The comments are owned by the poster.
