FEBRUARY 24 - BIRTHS Gregori Aleksandrovich Margulis (source) Born 24 Feb 1946 Russian mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1978 for his contributions to the theory of Lie groups, though he was not allowed by the Soviet government to travel to Finland to receive the award. In 1990 Margulis immigrated to the United States. Margulis' work was largely involved in solving a number of problems in the theory of Lie groups. In particular, Margulis proved a long-standing conjecture by Atle Selberg concerning discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. The techniques he used in his work were drawn from combinatorics, ergodic theory, dynamical systems, and differential geometry. Henri Frankfort (source) Born 24 Feb 1897; died 16 Jul 1954. Dutch-American archaeologist who completed a well-documented reconstruction of ancient Mesopotamian culture, established the relation between Egypt and Mesopotamia, and discovered much new information on both civilizations. From the late 1920s to the early 1950s, Frankfort's research into the prehistoric and dynastic cultures of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia was at the forefront of archaeological scholarship. At Abydos, in 1925, Frankfort resumed work which had been started by Naville at the Osireion, the enigmatic structure behind the temple of Seti. Out of this excavation arose a project to record the fine reliefs of the temple of Seti itself.

Hopfield, one of the world's top physicists who has successfully crossed interdisciplinary boundaries (he is a professor in the department of molecular biology at Princeton University), is the recipient of the 2001 Dirac Medal. The citation announcing the award states that Hopfield "has made important contributions in an impressively broad spectra of scientific subjects." After his early research on light-emitting diodes, Hopfield turned to biology, where his 'Hopfield model' of neural processing demonstrated "how qualitatively different computation in a computer and in the brain could be." Como ocurre con los Premios Nobel, representa para los galardonados el pasar a la Historia de la Ciencia. Fields Procede el nombre de John Charles Fields (1863-1932), que en 1924 Presidió el Congreso Internacional de Matemáticas, en el cual se hizo la propuesta de concesión a los descubrimientos matemáticos más destacados. Se otorga el premio cada 4 años, y en total pueden recibir la medalla Fields hasta seis matemáticos en cada edición del mismo. Los galardonados han de ser menores de 40 años de edad. Aunque en algunas ocasiones se han concedido hasta un total de cuatro medallas Fields, en la última ocasión, agosto de 2002, solo han sido premiados dos de los posibles candidatos de todo el mundo. Nel testamento lasciò parte di questa fortuna a una fondazione: il premio Nobel. Cinque premi annuali di uguale valore assegnati, a partire dal 1901, dalla Reale Accademia delle Scienze di Svezia. Il premio viene attribuito allo scienziato che sia pervenuto alle più importanti scoperte inerenti la fisica, la chimica, la medicina, all'autore dell'opera letteraria più rappresentativa e a chi si è meglio adoperato per la pace nel mondo. Nel 1969 la banca di Svezia ha istituito anche un premio per le scienze economiche. Non è ben noto il motivo storico che ha portato Nobel a escludere dalla sua fondazione le scienze matematiche. Secondo alcuni pettegolezzi, la causa è da ascriversi ai litigi personali scoppiati tra Nobel e il matematico Mittag-Leffler suo connazionale: gelosia per colpa di donne, eccessiva intraprendenza di Mittag-Leffler? Secondo altri storici, Nobel si interessava completamente di matematica. Il premio Nobel per la matematica non è mai stato istituito. Esiste però un premio equivalente: la medaglia Fields.
