Elementary Proof of MacMahon's Conjecture
Authors: David M. Bressoud
Subj-class: Combinatorics
MSC-class:
Major Percy A. MacMahon's first paper on plane partitions included a conjectured generating function for symmetric plane partitions. This conjecture was proven almost simultaneously by George Andrews and Ian Macdonald, Andrews using the machinery of basic hypergeometric series and Macdonald employing his knowledge of symmetric functions. The purpose of this paper is to simplify Macdonald's proof by providing a direct, inductive proof of his formula which expresses the sum of Schur functions whose partitions fit inside a rectangular box as a ratio of determinants.

biography
Born Mary Tomlinson in Indiana in 1890, Marjorie Main's father was a minister who did not approve of dramatics as a form of entertainment. She briefly attended college in Indiana but left to attend drama school. Upon graduation, she taught dramatics for a year but eventually went into vaudeville in the 1910s. When she married Dr. Stanley Krebs in 1921, she more or less gave up performing for several years. Krebs, who was about 25 years older than Main, retired to New York later in the 1920s; Main then resumed acting, this time on Broadway. Her film career began with small roles in the early 1930s. But with the death of her husband in 1935, Main threw herself into her work. She never remarried and had no children.
From 1936 through 1957, Main acted in more than 100 'A' and 'B' pictures, tackling comedy and drama with ease. She took on a variety of supporting roles in big-budget films, and she was often a star attraction in the B's, such as the Ma and Pa Kettle series produced by Universal.

European Women in Mathematics Web-based Mentoring Scheme
http://ewm.brookes.ac.uk was launched on 15 November 2002 by Eryl McNally, UK MEP. Please have a look and consider signing up as a mentor (both female and male mentors are welcome). If you are a female postgraduate student, postdoctoral student, or have recently started your career as a lecturer you may also wish to sign up to get a mentor. Please draw this to the attention of other colleagues if you think they would be interested in the scheme.

The History of Astronomy
A meeting to set up a Society for the History of Astronomy was held at Wadham College, Oxford on 29 June 2002. The Society's principal aims are: To promote an academic, educational and popular interest in the history of the science of astronomy and related subjects. To encourage new research into the history of astronomy, especially amateur research at the local level, and to facilitate its collation, preservation, publication and dissemination both by conventional means and through the internet or such other new means as may subsequently become available. To bring together those with a common interest in the subject, whether amateur or professional researcher or general enthusiast, and to organise activities for the benefit and interest of the members. AN OLD ALGORITHM IN A NEW ERA
(Major McMahon, you were born too soon!)
ABSTRACT: In the late 1890's, Major Percy Alexander MacMahon developed his Partition Analysis with the object of proving his conjectures on plane partitions. While writing at length on this topic and clearly indicating it's power, MacMahon eventually admitted that he was unable to apply his new tool to solve any of his conjectures on plane partitions.
In this talk, we shall examine MacMahon's method from a purely elementary point of view and shall illustrate its power by considering questions of general interest. First we turn to Question B3 from the 1999 Putnam exam (see the October 2000 Monthly). Second we ask how many triangles are there with integer sides and perimeter n . Our object will be to illustrate the utility of a 19th century idea that is only now coming into its own in the era of computer algebra.

Became a star on Broadway before moving to films in 1929, where she again quickly rose to stardom. Probably the best and most-loved soprano ever in U.S. films. She was first partnered with Maurice Chevalier, then with Nelson Eddy. By the 1940s, she was on her own and playing opposite a variety of leading men, including her own husband, Gene Raymond.
