Percy MacMahon was born into a military family. His father was Brigadier-General P W MacMahon and, it is interesting to note that as a young child he had a fascination with the way that the ammunition was stacked. This early mathematical interest, before he even knew what mathematics was, is typical of many who go on to become leading mathematicians. MacMahon was educated at a school in Cheltenham and was always destined for a military career. In February 1871 he entered the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich as a gentleman cadet, and in the following year he became a Lieutenant. After his education at Woolwich, he served in India for five years beginning in 1873; first in Madras, then Lucknow, then Sinapore. He was with the Royal Artillery's No 1 Mountain Battery on the North West Frontier of the British Indian Empire when, on 9 August 1877, he took ill a few weeks before his unit went into battle. In 1878 he was sent home to England where it took him eighteen months to recover his health. Promoted to Captain in 1881, he was appointed as Instructor in Mathematics at the Royal Military Academy in the following year. He held this post until 1888 when he became Assistant Inspector at the Arsenal. Three years later he was appointed as Instructor in Physics at the Artillery College, being promoted to Professor of Physics there before he retired from the Army in 1898. In fact he had suffered a great disappointment in the previous year when he was a candidate for the Savilian Chair of Geometry at Oxford.

He served as President of the London Mathematical Society from 1894-96 and then took on a number of different roles. In 1901 he served as President of Section A of the British Association for its meeting in Glasgow then, from 1902 to 1914, he was one of the Secretaries to the British Association. From 1906 to 1920 he served as Deputy Warden of the Standards of the Board of Trade.

He worked on invariants, following Cayley and Sylvester . Then he studied partitions and Latin squares, giving a Presidential Address to the London Mathematical Society on combinatorial analysis in 1894. MacMahon wrote a two volume treatise on this last mentioned topic in 1915 which is a classic. In 1921 he wrote New Mathematical Pastimes , a book on mathematical recreations. In 1890 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Subject: [HM] Major Percy Alexander MacMahon Author: paul@marybj.cix.co.uk Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2001 18:35:52 +0100 Dear Colleagues, I am a research student with the Open University in the UK, supervised by Dr Robin Wilson. My topic is the life and work of Major MacMahon. The Major's mathematical works have of course been collected and published by George Andrews. However, I have so far been unable to locate much in the way of original manuscript material, mathematical or otherwise. St John's College Cambridge have a few letters written by the Major, and St Andrew's have some correspondence with D'Arcy Thompson. Given his large output (131 papers including the military ones) there must be more somewhere - diaries would be nice! - but I have exhausted the search facilities available to me here on the Hertfordshire/Essex border. Does anyone know of any original MacMahon material, or have suggestions where else I might look, please ? Thank you. Yours sincerely, Paul Garcia 24 Rowan Drive Turnford Herts EN10 6HH 01992 461517 The Math Forum

Mac Mahon's Problem
... To the Main Page "Mathematische Basteleien" What are Mac Mahon's Coloured Cubes?
MacMahon's cubes are the cubes which develop if you give the six sides six different colours in all possible combinations. The colours are not determined. You can choose any colour. I chose red(1), light blue(2), dark blue(3), dark green(4), light green(5), and pink(6).
A cube is drawn on the left as a net and in perspective with three turned square sides. P.A. Mac Mahon was an English mathematician and major. He lived from 1854 to 1929.
There are 30 Mac Mahon Cubes top If you give the squares of a cube the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and form all permutations of the six numbers, you get 1*2*3*4*5*6=6!=720 cubes.
Many among the cubes are the same. They can be transferred by turns around one of the 13 axles into one another. There are 24 turns and thus only 720:24 = 30 different cubes. The following picture illustrates these facts. The numbers below the cubes mean the number of the turns.
