Colin Maclaurin (1698 - 1746) From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Colin Maclaurin , who was born in Kilmodan in Argyllshire in February 1698, and died at York on June 14; 1746, was educated at the university of Glasgow; in 1717 he was elected, at the early age of nineteen, professor of mathematics at Aberdeen; and in 1725 he was appointed the deputy of the mathematical professor at Edinburgh, and ultimately succeeded him. There was some difficulty in securing a stipend for a deputy, and Newton privately wrote offering to bear the cost so as to enable the university to secure the services of Maclaurin. Maclaurin took an active part in opposing the advance of the Young Pretender in 1745; on the approach of the Highlanders he fled to York, but the exposure in the trenches at Edinburgh and the privations he endured in his escape proved fatal to him. His chief works are his Geometria Organica , London, 1720; his De Linearum Geometricarum Proprietatibus , London, 1720; his

Back to the Table of Contents Biography of Colin Maclaurin Colin Maclaurin was born in Kilmodan in Argyllshire, Scotland in February of 1698. He was enrolled in the University of Glasgow at age 11. At the early age of nineteen he was elected professor of mathematics at Aberdeen. In 1725 he was appointed the deputy of the mathematical professor at Edinburgh. There was some difficulty in securing a stipend for a deputy, and Newton privately wrote offering to bear the cost so as to enable the university to secure the services of Maclaurin. Maclaurin took an active part in opposing the advance of the Young Pretender in 1745. On the approach of the Highlanders he fled to York, but the exposure in the trenches at Edinburgh and the privations he endured in his escape proved fatal to him. His chief works are his Geometria Organica , London, 1720; his De Linearum Geometricarum Proprietatibus , London,1720; his Treatise on Fluxions , Edinburgh, 1742; his Algebra , London,1748; and his Account of Newton's Discoveries , London, 1748.

In 1745, having been very active in making plans, and superintending the operations necessary for the defence of the city of Edinburgh against the Highland army, Mr. MacLaurin was, upon their entering the city, obliged to withdraw to the north of England, when he was invited by the archbishop of York to reside with him. On his journey southward he had a fall from his horse, and the fatigue, anxiety, and cold to which he was exposed on this occasion, laid the foundation of a dropsy, of which he died soon after his return to Edinburgh, June 14, 1746. His portrait, from an engraving in Smiths Iconographia Scotica, is subjoined. Below is the inscription on one of a group of seven or eight commemorative tablets high up on the outside wall at the south-west corner of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. Su padre murió cuando tenía seis meses y su madre murió cuando tenía 9 años. Él y su hermano se fueron a vivir con su tío, que también era ministro de una parroquia. A los 11 años entró en la Universidad de Glasgow. La edad puede parecer sorprendente, desde la perspectiva de hoy, pero en aquella época la educación universitaria no era como la actual, era como una continuación de los estudios de la escuela. A los 12 años estudió por su cuenta el libro de Euclides Elementos , que tenía un compañero de habitación. Se graduó a los 14 años. En 1714, Maclaurin regresó con su tío y allí pasó unos años felices. En 1717 fue nombrado profesor de matemáticas del Colegio Mariscal de la Universidad de Aberdeen, después de 10 días de exámenes con otros candidatos que competían por el puesto. En 1719 hizo un viaje a Londres donde conoció a Newton (algunos biógrafos dicen que Maclaurin nunca se encontró con Newton , sin embargo en una de sus cartas Maclaurin dice que se conocieron) y fue nombrado miembro de la Royal Society.
