Both of Hector Macdonald 's parents, his mother Annie Munro and his father Donald Macdonald, were from Kiltearn. Hector was the older of his parents two sons and, as a young child, he lived in Edinburgh. However, not long after he began his schooling in the Scottish capital, the family moved to a farm near Fearn, in Easter Ross. Fearn is north of the Cromarty Firth which runs along the northern side of the Black Isle, which is a peninsula just to the north of Inverness. Even today this is a fairly isolated community and it would have been much more so when the Macdonald family moved there. After arriving in Fearn, Hector attended the local school before attending the Royal Academy in Tain which is no more than a small village about 5 km north west of Fearn. He completed his school education at the Old Aberdeen Grammar School before entering Aberdeen University in 1882. After studying mathematics at Aberdeen University, he graduated with First Class Honours in 1886 and won a Fullerton Scholarship. As many Scottish mathematicians of this era, Macdonald proceeded to Cambridge to take the Mathematical Tripos after completing his first degree in Scotland. Entering Clare College, Cambridge, as a foundation scholar, he graduated as fourth

Elected to the Royal Society in 1901, he became professor of mathematics at Aberdeen in 1905, winning the Society's Royal Medal in 1916. Macdonald worked on electric waves and solved difficult problems regarding diffraction of these waves by summing series of Bessel functions. He corrected his 1903 solution to the problem of a perfectly conducting sphere embedded in an infinite homogeneous dielectric in 1904 after a subtle error was pointed out by Reference (One book/article) References elsewhere in this archive: Hector M Macdonald was elected to the Royal Society of London in 1901. The Hummingbird Saint "Hard to put down"
TimeOut - Recommended Read
"A mix of philosophy and political fable set in an exotic locale - John Fowles crossed with Conrad"
The Guardian
"The plot is fascinating and unusual; Mark is an intelligently drawn hero, and his moral struggle is involving at all times. What makes the novel particularly distinctive, though, is the Central American setting: sultry, threatening and the perfect backdrop for the moral equivocation that takes place"
Good Book Guide - Choice
"A chilling thriller that taps the surface of moral idealism in an imperfect world"
The List
"Does Macdonald write thrillers? Well, yes, although there is far more style and invention here than is often found in the genre"

Macdonald's novel 'The Mind Game' kin to 'The Magus'
March 11, 2001
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us If you liked John Fowles' "The Magus," or Donna Tartt's "The Secret History," you will definitely like "The Mind Game" by British novelist Hector Macdonald (Ballantine, 2001, $24.95). Many novelists dislike comparisons of their work to other writers, but in a recent phone interview Macdonald didn't at all mind, agreeing that "The Magus" is "a very fine book" and that Tartt's is "a lovely book." Such generosity and good manners! Macdonald seems like a lovely young guy, also well-traveled and sophisticated for his age, which is 27. I spoke to him in his San Francisco hotel room by phone last Monday. I told him I was calling from Davis. "Davis? Oh, yes, I was just there," said Macdonald. "I spent Saturday night there with friends," he added. "On Sunday we drove a very windy road over to Napa. It was a very exciting ride in the rain," he said. Macdonald will never think of Davis as anything other than soggy and wet, like his London home, although I tried to convince him it was sunny and hot for seven months of the year.

Major-General Sir Hector Archibald Macdonald 1853-1903
(K.C.B., D.S.O., A.D.C., L.L.D.)
Hector Macdonald, a crofter's son, began his military career as a private in the British army, and later became a Major General. Hector Macdonald fought in the Afghan war and both Boer wars. Distinguished himself when he saved the British army from total destruction at the Battle of Omdurman. At the Battle of Omdurman Macdonald's brigade met the attacking Dervishes with heavy fire, Macdonald kept his troops well organized and disciplined, he continually maneuvered the lines to meet the ongoing threat of the attacking Dervishes. "Amid the roar of the firing and the dust, smoke and confusion of the charge of front, the general [Macdonald] found time to summon the officers of IX Sudanese around him, rebuked them for having wheeled into line in anticipation of his order, and requested them to drill more steadily in brigade."- Winston Churchill Before long other regiments began to arrive and backup Macdonald's lines, the firing upon the Dervishes was so intense that they began to retreat, fleeing into the desert. At the battles end 10,000 Dervishes lay dead, 16,000 wounded, and 5,000 prisoners. The battle was over the British army saved, the army lost 48 men and 382 wounded. At the end of the day, when the ammunition from Macdonald's brigades was counted, there were two rounds per man. The British army won the battle and avenged the death of General Gordon of Khartoum. Macdonald was the hero of the day and truly saved the British army.
