http://www.mcculloughgenealogy.info/history_early.html
Early McCullough History:
This information was compiled by Richard McCullough of the Coffee County Tennessee McCulloughs.
The first of the name was Cullagh, son of Allil, who was killed in a skirmish with the Picts in 864. As far back as the 11th century, this ancient family held the lands of Cardoness, Myretoun, Ardwall, and Kirkcudbrightshire. The McCullough name first appears in records in 1296 when Thomas Maculagh del counte de Wyggetone, as the sheriff of Wigtownshire, Scotland, rendered homage to king Edward I. He appears in records again in 1305 with his brother Michel, as a juror on inquest at Berwick, Scotland. Other early McCulloughs include Sir Patrick McCoulagh and Gilbert McCoulaghe in Galloway, Scotland in 1354. Records show that Sir Patrick McCoulagh was awarded "100 marks in recompense of his suffering and loss of lands in Scotland for his allegiance to the King of England in 1360." Patrick Mackullouch was listed as being the vicar of Arbroath, Scotland.
The surname McCullough appears to be patronymical in origin and is an old Galwegian name (Galwegian means inhabitant of Galloway, Scotland). Research indicates that the original name means "son of the boar' and was derived from the Gaelic word culagh. To the Celts, the boar was a symbol of fearlessness in battle and was used as a synonym of McCullough. The Scots used the prefix "Mac" to denote “son of” and Mac was sometimes abbreviated Mc or M’. There were two distinct groups of Scottish surnames the Highland and Lowland. The Highland Scots designated a man by his father's name, and they generally were associated with a clan. The clan system was largely responsible for preserving the old ways of the Highlanders. A man would join a clan for protection and, to show allegiance to the clan chief, he would adopt a clan surname; usually Mac followed by the chief’s name.

1842 in science
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The year 1842 CE in science For the journal named Science , visit Science (journal). Science (from scientia, Latin for "knowledge") refers to the systematic acquisition of new knowledge about nature and the body of already existing knowledge so gained. The scientific method is based on careful observation and the testing of theories by experiment. Science does not claim to make any statements about how nature actually "is", for the scientist should know that we can only make conclusions about our observations of nature. The development of Quantum Mechanics in the early 20th century showed us that our observations equate to interactions, and the incredible implications of wave-particle duality made "objectivity" in science practically impossible.

One is the development and application of tools, machines, materials and processes that help to solve human problems. As a human activity, technology predates both science and engineering. The term technology thus often characterises inventions and gadgets using recently-discovered scientific principles and processes. However, even very old inventions such as the wheel exemplify technology.

Last revision: Aug. 3, 1999 An early use of MACLAURIN'S SERIES in English is in 1902 in the Encyclopaedia Britannica in the article "Infinitesimal Calculus": This result is usually called Maclaurin's series, having been given in his Fluxions (1742). It had, however, been previously published by Stirling in his Meth. Diff. (1717); but neither Stirling nor Maclaurin laid any claim to the theorem as being original, both referring it to Taylor. [James A. Landau] MAGIC SQUARE is found in the title Des quassez ou tables magiques by Frenicle de Bessy (1605-1675). The first citation in the OED2 is in 1704 in Lexicon technicum, or an universal English dictionary of arts and sciences by John Harris. Benjamin Franklin used the term in his autobiography. The term MANDELBROT SET was coined by Adrien Douady, according to an Internet web page. MANIFOLD was apparently introduced as Mannigfaltigkeit by Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866). MANTISSA is a late Latin term of Etruscan origin, originally meaning an addition, a makeweight, or something of minor value, and was written mantisa.

Sean MacDiarmada was one of the greatest of the Easter Week leaders. He was not a writer, though he did manage a newspaper. He was so quiet and unassuming that he tends to be forgotten. Yet he was one of the greatest Irishmen that ever lived. MacDiarmada was Tom Clarke's close friend. Clarke had completed one of his 15 years... in English jails when Sean MacDiarmada was born in Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim, in the year 1884. Like Clarke, he ran away from home when he was only a boy - just 15. He arrived in Glasgow in search of employment with only a few shillings in his pocket, and was lucky to have an uncle living in that city. His uncle was a gardener and for a time Sean worked with him, but gave up gardening to become a conductor on the Glasgow trams. Here he worked for 12 months, and stayed altogether 2 years in Glasgow. Then he returned to Ireland and went to Belfast, where he worked for a time as a tram conductor, and later as a barman. In Belfast he joined the Ancient Order of Hibernians closely associated with the Irish Parliamentary Party. The AOH was considered the custodian of Irish nationalism, but MacDiarmada did not remain long a member of the Order.
