Bacon, Francis Bacon, Francis, Instauratio Magna, but completed only two parts, The Advancement of Learning (1605), later expanded in Latin as De Augmentis Scientiarum (1623), and the Novum Organum (1620). Bacon's contribution to philosophy was his application of the inductive method of modern science. He urged full investigation in all cases, avoiding theories based on insufficient data. He has been widely censured for being too mechanical, failing to carry his investigations to their logical ends, and not staying abreast of the scientific knowledge of his own day. In the 19th cent., Macaulay initiated a movement to restore Bacon's prestige as a scientist. Today his contributions are regarded with considerable respect. In The New Atlantis (1627) he describes a scientific utopia that found partial realization with the organization of the Royal Society in 1660. His

"The wisest, brightest, meanest of mankind." About this time his father died, without leaving him, a younger son, a competence. Nor would his great relatives give him an office or sinecure by which he might be supported while he sought truth, and he was forced to plod at the law, which he never liked, resisting the blandishments and follies by which he was surrounded; and at intervals, when other young men of his age and rank were seeking pleasure, he was studying Nature, science, history, philosophy, poetry, everything, even the whole domain of truth, and with such success that his varied attainments were rather a hindrance to an appreciation of his merits as a lawyer and his preferment in his profession. In 1586 he entered parliament, sitting for Taunton, and also became a bencher at Gray's Inn; so that at twenty-six he was in full practice in the courts of Westminster, also a politician, speaking on almost every question of importance which agitated the House of Commons for twenty years, distinguished for eloquence as well as learning, and for a manly independence which did not entirely please the Queen, from whom all honors came. Then began to gather the storms which were to wreck his fortunes. The nation now was clamorous for reform; and Coke, the enemy of Bacon, who was then the leader of the Reform party in the House of Commons, stimulated the movement. The House began its scrutiny with the administration of justice; and Bacon could not stand before it, for as the highest judge in England he was accused of taking bribes before rendering decisions, and of many cases of corruption so glaring that no defence was undertaken; and the House of Lords had no alternative but to sentence him to the Tower and fine him, to degrade him from his office, and banish him from the precincts of the court,a fall so great, and the impression of it on the civilized world so tremendous, that the case of a judge accepting bribes has rarely since been known.

Introduction
Francis Bacon, engraving by William Marshall, 1640 Mary Evans Picture Library Francis Bacon, lawyer, statesman, philosopher, and master of the English tongue, is remembered in literary terms for the sharp worldly wisdom of a few dozen essays; by students of constitutional history for his power as a speaker in Parliament and in some famous trials and as James I's lord chancellor; and intellectually as a man who claimed all knowledge as his province and, after a magisterial survey, urgently advocated new ways by which men might establish a legitimate command over nature for the relief of man's estate.
LIFE
Youth and early maturity.
Bacon was born Jan. 22, 1561, at York House off the Strand, London, the younger of the two sons of the lord keeper, Sir Nicholas Bacon, by his second marriage. Nicholas Bacon, born in comparatively humble circumstances, had risen to become lord keeper of the great seal. Francis' cousin through his mother was Robert Cecil, later earl of Salisbury and chief minister of the crown at the end of Elizabeth I's reign and the beginning of James I's. From 1573 to 1575 Bacon was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, but his weak constitution caused him to suffer ill health there. His distaste for what he termed "unfruitful" Aristotelian philosophy began at Cambridge. From 1576 to 1579 Bacon was in France as a member of the English ambassador's suite. He was recalled abruptly after the sudden death of his father, who left him relatively little money. Bacon remained financially embarrassed virtually until his death.

Francis Bacon The Story of a Character Assassination Nieves Mathews Francis Bacon is generally remembered as a great man, founder of modern science and philosophy, a just judge, and a teacher of kings. In England and America, however, he is more commonly seen as a cruel, corrupt, and power-hungry politician. Which appraisal is correct? In this fascinating reevaluation of one of Britain's most significant figures, Nieves Mathews examines the charges against Bacon and reveals how distorted facts can be recast as historical truths. In 1621 Bacon fell from power as Lord Chancellor, the highest position in the land. Charged with accepting bribes, he was convicted, fined, imprisoned, and exiled from the Court. He died five years later, disgraced and deeply in debt. In this illuminating study of the Jacobean administrationa system which depended on corruption at every levelthe author shows Bacon to have been among the least tainted of the king's officials, the scapegoat in a political conspiracy aimed at dislodging the royal favorite. The destruction of Bacon's reputation followed Thomas Babington Macaulay's eloquent "Essay on Bacon," published in 1837. Macaulay's depiction of a cloven-hearted genius, at once the greatest and meanest of mankind, launched a tireless search among Bacon's biographers for evidence of malice and corruption. With the benefit of recent scholarship, Mathews portrays a man both single-minded and fallible, with positive qualities and flaws. Her penetrating reappraisal rescues Bacon from a long tradition of abuse and misrepresentation.

They want LI to march, martyr-like, into the burning issues of the day into the very heart of the pyre. This is why so many of you have written in flocks of you, herds of you, you know how you congregate out there, in the darkness, a murder of readers, sometimes we wake up and feel you out there, sometimes we really do written in to ask us point blank: was Macauley right about Francis Bacon
You are, of course, referring to Macaulay's hundred page "review" of Basil Montague's edition of the works of Francis Bacon. Macaulay wrote it in Calcutta, and saw it published by the Edinburgh Review in July, 1837. Like many other of Macaulay's essays, it had an electric effect after it was published. The Victorians always did things on an imperial scale: While LI is happy if we have 1000 words to tussle with a book, Macaulay was given 100 pages to review, essentially, a preface. The next editor of Bacon's works, a man named Spedding, wrote a nine hundred page refutation of Macaulay's essay. This is the same logic that conquered most of Africa and half of Asia.

on the constitution org site) As a Plato, Bacon could be used against the force that was transforming the traditional form of property, and the hierarchy built upon it, because that force was perceived to be against every cultural value worth keeping. The Whiggish assault on the conventions of the rural landholders, on religion, was to its professional mourners (from Carlyle to Ruskin) the Dunciad writ large dullness as a social force, philistinism as a cultural dominant, the rush into some vast darkness within which one could hear, faintly, the reverberation of gunfire. From Emerson to Newman to Arnold, all the 19th century poobahs agreed that the philistine attitude had a charter, a Magna Carta, and it was the Bacon essay.

    PREFACE
W HEN THE PURITANS set sail to cross the Atlantic, they were not going to a small, manageable island. Their destination was a continent, a new world. Their mission, as described with the bias of European civilization, was to establish a beachhead, a first settlement on the beginning edge of a land that was enormous, mysterious, frightening, and challenging. Clearly, the territory later called the American West was going to play a major role in the development of the nation they hoped to establish. The Puritans had little knowledge of what lay beyond their foothold on the New England coast, but early explorers had told of vast lands, strange natives, and incredible variety. The continent to the west of Plymouth and Jamestown, with its millions of undeveloped acres, added a massive physicality to the Puritan adventure in religious and political freedom. As religion receded from politics and democratic capitalism developed, the West provided opportunities for the poor and temptations to the exploiter, thus making the American experiment a realistic testing ground for democracy. A chapter in history began to unfold, a chapter characterized by such materials as inspire myth-makers. Both marvelous and terrible, the development of the West came to be symbolized in the American mind by pioneering, Indian wars and cattle drives, by the talismanic figure of the cowboy a merging of Hispanic and Anglo traditions by the heroic yet shameful railroad story, by miners, farmers, and loggers; and, at the end of the trail, in the promised land of California, there was a pot of gold. Back east, White House policies and Congressional debates often centered on the lands and riches of the West. From colonial times to the present day, recognition of the importance of the West to American history has been clear and continuous.
