In this school he taught many outstanding pupils and he encouraged them into a research career in mathematics. two such students were Watson and Littlewood and we know of the teaching methods employed by Macaulay through the writing of Littlewood ... there was little formal instruction; students were directed to read widely but thoroughly, encouraged to be self-reliant, and inspired to look forward to pursuing research in mathematics. Macaulay wrote 14 papers on algebraic geometry and polynomial ideals. The papers look at algebraic curves, the Riemann

The most noteworthy bearer of this name was Charles the Great, commonly known as Charlemagne, a king of the Franks who came to rule over most of Europe. Several Holy Roman Emperors bore this name, as well as kings of England, France, Spain, Portugal, Sweden and Hungary. Other famous bearers include naturalist Charles Darwin who revolutionized biology with his theory of evolution, and novelist Charles Dickens who wrote such works as 'Great Expectations' and 'A Tale of Two Cities'.

And then there were a pair, boy and girl. I saw them together a great deal, and at first I thought they were boyfriend and girlfriend, until one day I saw them up close and realized they had to be siblings. Later I learned they were twins. They looked very much alike, with heavy dark-blond hair and epicene faces as clear, as cheerful and grave, as a couple of Flemish angels. And perhaps most unusual in the context of Hampdenwhere pseudo-intellects and teenage decadents abounded, and where black clothing was de regueur they liked to wear pale clothes, particularly white. In this swarm of cigarettes and dark sophistication they appeared here and there like figures from an allegory, or long-dead celebrants from some forgotten garden party.

FRANCIS BACON
Being a close inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his "Fall" as Lord Chancellor. The evidence now adduced proves conclusively that he was the victim of a plot. A remarkable story is revealed, told with vivid fidelity to the facts of the times, how an innocent man, The Greatest Genius in History, was forced to "Desert his Defence" under duress, and to enter a plea of "Guilty" to charges of Corruption and Bribery at the express command of King James. by ALFRED DODD Author of "The Secret Shakespeare"

Introduction:- Bacon's real claim to fame is: not that he, as the lord chancellor, in 1621, was removed from office for accepting a litigant's bribe; nor, that he was the real writer of the Shakespearean plays (one of the controversies in English literature, the "Baconian controversy") ; but rather Francis Bacon is known as a philosopher, one of the first order. Bacon delineated the principles of the inductive method, which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science, even though philosophers and scientists of the day, - and seemingly today, yet - repudiated both his theories and methodology, alike. Bacon argued that the only knowledge of importance to man was empirically rooted in the natural world; and that a clear system of scientific inquiry would assure man's mastery over the world. He was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power." He was quite taken up by the "materialist" theories and the resultant discoveries of both Copernicus and Galileo . Bacon, along with Galileo are known in the literature as "the great anti-Aristotelians who created the 'modern scientific' view of Nature."

Beard, Charles A. (1876-1958): § Beard had been on the faculty of Columbia University. In his earlier works his liberalism shone forth (he figured that, as property owners, the framers of the American Constitution were chiefly interested in constructing a charter to protect their wealth). He was a strong advocate of the idea that the study of history should include consideration of all cultural forces. He wrote several books with his wife, a historian of both the feministic and the labour movements. Beard's early liberalism faded toward the end of his life, when he began advocating more conservative ideas; he became an isolationist in foreign policy, and an outspoken critic of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

RG 243 Title: Beverley Macaulay fonds. 1924-1975; predominant 1924-1928. 5 cm of textual material Biographical Sketch:
Beverley Francis Macaulay was born at Castalia, Grand Manan, New Brunswick in 1907. He attended Rothesay Collegiate School and upon high school graduation, he entered the University of New Brunswick where he received a BSc in Electrical Engineering in 1928. At UNB he was an outstanding athlete, vice-president of the Student Council, a member of the UNB dance orchestra, and president of his graduating class. Macaulay worked as an engineer with Bell Telephone Company of Canada in Quebec prior to World War II, during which he served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, and rejoined the company in 1946. From 1951 to 1957, Macaulay was Business Manager and Secretary to the Senate at UNB. He spent three years in Canadian industry before returning to the University as Vice-President (Administration) in 1960. During his career at UNB, Macaulay worked with four UNB presidents, oversaw the construction of more than 30 new buildings, and helped to shape the administration into a business organization. He was active in several fund-raising campaigns and helped to design UNB's coat of arms and flag.

    BEAUMONT
BEAUMONT AND FLETCHER BIBLIOGRAPHICAL APPENDIX A list of the plays attributed to Beaumont and Fletcher, with some details, is added, with the premiss that beyond the main lines of criticism laid down in Mr Swinburnes article above it is often difficult to dogmatize on authorship. Even in cases where the play was produced long after Beaumont had ceased to write for the stage there can be no certainty that we are not dealing with a piece which is an adaptation of an earlier play by a later hand. The Coxcomb (acted c. 1610, and by the Children of the Queens Revels in 1612, pr. 1647) seems to have undergone later revision by Massinger. Fletchers collaboration with other dramatists had begun during his c000exion with Beaumont, who apparently ceased to write for the stage two or three years before his death. Works Assigned to Beaumonts Sole Authorship. The Woman Hater (pr. 1607, as lately acted by the children of Pauls ) was assigned formerly to Fletcher. The Masque of the Inner Temple and Grays Inn was presented at Whitehall on the 26th of February I612, on the marriage of the Prince and Princess Palatine. Of Four Plays, or Moral Representations, in One (acted 1608, pr. 1647), the Induction, with The Triumph of Honor and The Triumph of Love, both founded on tales from the Decameron, are by Beaumont. His various visits to England led him to take a deep interest in the impending struggle between the American colonies and the mother-country. His sympathies were entirely with the former; and by his unwearied exertions he succeeded in inducing the French government to give ample, though private, assistance in money and arms to the Americans. He himself, partly on his own account, but chiefly as the agent of the French and Spanish governments, carried on an enormous traffic with America. Under the name of Rodrigue Hortalez et Cie, he employed a fleet of forty vessels to provide help for the insurgents.

    FRANCIS ATTERBURY.
(December 1853.) Few things in literary history are more extraordinary than the storm which this little dissertation raised. Bentley had treated Boyle with forbearance; but he had treated Christchurch with contempt; and the Christchurch-men, wherever dispersed, were as much attached to their college as a Scotchman to his country, or a Jesuit to his order. Their influence was great. They were dominant at Oxford, powerful in the Inns of Court and in the College of Physicians, conspicuous in Parliament and in the literary and fashionable circles of London. Their unanimous cry was, that the honour of the college must be vindicated, that the insolent Cambridge pedant must be put down. Poor Boyle was unequal to the task, and disinclined to it. It was, therefore, assigned to his tutor, Atterbury. After having been long in indirect communication with the exiled family, he, in 1717, began to correspond directly with the Pretender. The first letter of the correspondence is extant. In that letter Atterbury boasts of having, during many years past, neglected no opportunity of serving the Jacobite cause. "My daily prayer," he says, "is that you may have success. May I live to see that day, and live no longer than I do what is in my power to forward it." It is to be remembered that he who wrote thus was a man bound to set to the church of which he was overseer an example of strict probity; that he had repeatedly sworn allegiance to the House of Brunswick; that he had assisted in placing the crown on the head of George I., and that he had abjured James III., "without equivocation or mental reservation, on the true faith of a Christian."
